Does it translate to higher pay and better living conditions for the citizens?
Australia's minimum wage is A$15 per hour.
What is Singapore's minimum wage?
True.
Being the most competitive economy doesn't translate much to tangible benefits for the common people especially the lower to middle class.
Due to the current european crisis singapore could have became number 1 due to default and not by productivity alone.in otherwords.....singapore was lucky this year....i wonder how it would pan out without any crisis worldwide.

the irony here is, we r talking about the most competitive economy, not the most competitive citizens or class of peoples, you got to get it straight.
angel730,
the economy is runned by the industrial output
industrial output is runned by the people (engineers ,assistant engineers etc)
that us the basis on how they gauge the report according to data from MNC and production output per day or per year.
they didnt go do that report by visiting the nearby coffeeshop or supermarket.
So long as Singaporean continue to be fed with bird seeds rather than red meat we will always be competitive.
