SINGAPORE : Fewer Permanent Resident and Citizenship applications
went through in the past year due to more stringent requirements.
Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Law, Ho Peng Kee, said
eligibility rules were tightened in the last quarter of 2009 to manage
overall numbers.
Some 46,300 Permanent Residents were approved between April last year to
March this year, out of 124,600 applications.
Another 19,300 Singapore Citizenship went through, out of 24,000
applications.
Associate Professor Ho said: "There would be applicants who may not meet
our new criteria and who no longer qualify for PR or citizenship.
"Others, even though they meet the new criteria, may take a longer time
before they are granted PR, or citizenship, as the residency
requirements have been stretched out in the new framework."
Those who do not yet qualify can apply for Long Term Visit Passes to
remain in Singapore.
In the same period, authorities received over 70,300 applications for
Long Term Visit Passes. About 80 per cent of them or 56,300 were
approved.
As to whether Singaporeans can get foreign relatives in to help with
care arrangements, each application is assessed on its own merit.
Assoc Prof Ho said: "Where a Singaporean family has critical needs and
has no other immediate options available locally to provide care to a
family member, such as, when there's a newborn baby, ICA may, on a
case-by-case basis, allow a foreign relative such as a foreign spouse's
mother, to extend her stay here.
"Sir, this is to help the family with interim care-giving for a limited
duration while they look for alternative arrangements for long-term
care."

Anyone realised what the govt did not disclose??
The no. of those who got work permits and are staying in sg to work! So is the influx of foreigners still there?
Two friends from Indo who work in SIA applied for PR not too long ago and they were rejected despite being at the start of 5 year contracts.
what the point of doing all this now
this should happened 18 years ago and not now
now, sorry to late
Too late. The criteria of PR and citizenship should have been stricter.
some pr are not earning a lot
now also never give us money
don't forget there is also this 40 years age discrimination that is still going on
i vote you, what did i get in return
more ft coming here
All these slower PR intake or lower PR applications are just wayang.
The govt slows down the PR intake, prior to election, to please the unhappy Singaporeans . Once the election is over and the current govt returning to power, the PR intake will be up again.
Foreigners are staying away from PR application because they know that this a sensitive period, with the govt trying to please these sore Singaporeans.
They staying on the sideline waiting for the election to be over to apply for PR. Once the election is over, there will be floodgate of PR application.

I would agree with you on this.
There is a lot of talk on the ground about this issue from citizens to foreigners to PRs alike and the concensus is that the numbers will be slowed until after the elections where the floodgates will open again.
For once, citizens, foreigners and PRs all agree on this one thing.
