Singapore’s National Climate Change Strategy
3.4. As an export-oriented economy, much of the energy used by our
industry is not to make products for local consumption but rather products for export. Singapore’s industry sector accounts for about half of Singapore’s
total energy use in 2005, most of it due to our key exporting industries such as
our refining, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and wafer fabrication industries.
For instance, Singapore is one of the largest refining centres in the world and
the three oil refineries account for about 20% of Singapore’s total energy use.
These oil refineries support our oil-trading hub, which serves the global
market, and an ever-growing petrochemicals industry chain.
