Is that living the high life or what?
Not high enough. If it is $40000 for a dress for last night's function, then it is.
To be rich is not a sin but when the global riches start to splurg on properties or other daily necessities and compete with ordinary Singaporean for these scarce resources, we really have a big problem!
If 1% of PRC Chinese start buying, there will be a demand for 1.3 million unit of houses. What about the Indian and the Indonesian? Isnt these ppl that the govern want to attract to sg???
Naturally in a capitalist society, the rich get richer and the poor, poorer. In sg's context, this problem is further compounded by the import of cheap labour to work as our executives and professionals, causing a downward pressure on salary levels.
And we have been told that these foreigners help us keep our jobs, 'cos without them, the companies would have high costs, then collapse and we lose our farking jobs!! Hahaha, I love the way they sweep these statements.
In term of around our region, our pay is much higher, that is why you can see foreigners flocking into here, but if will to compare with those western ang mo countries or the like of korea nad japan in asia, we are indeed lower. However, our cost of living is still far below them. For their poor, they really cannot make it in life there. But having a average wage here attract foreign investors, which is very important for singapore, especially a country without natural resources. If you look at some of the europe wage level, it is very high and that lead to investor moving away from them, even their own country big companies are moving out to invest in lower wage country like china, indonesia singapore etc etc.... , so as long as our consumer price index is at the norm range, we shouldn't be saying that our paidis low. And if you look at the Q in toto and 4D stores, restaurants, phone's shops, IT shows...are we that poor?
Go to RedHill and see the 1-room flats.
Not to mention,
There is something else,
In Singapore, there is a clever system of "outsourcing poverty".
The Bangladeshi workers live a very poor life, and live in bunkers / dorms with spartan conditions.
This is a clever way of assigning poverty to a temporary foreign group. They come for a while, then go. But while they are here, they live a poor life. They walk on the streets and people see them. Even though they are not integral part of Singapore society, but there is some impacts at the margins.

Perspective differentiation at play. Our bus stop and road side is a heaven for bangadesh and some indians from poor state of their countries, we move them in with residents, all start to complain like the serangoon case, we move them into dormitory, people like you start to claim outsouring or diversion of poverty. In my opinon, in an economy sense, these peoples come and help us build our economy physically, added the drained physical strength that our own workforce is depleting, I have alway respect them, poor or not poor, as long as they work, no rob, no snatch, no make money illegally, we should welcome them. And if you study the condition and statistics of crime rates for the past few years, Local and PRs are committing much much more layman offences such as cheating, molesting, raping, corruption etc etc than a foreign worker, in another words, they are more well behave, just the look seem to scare you off.

Hey, Angel, I dont know if you have visited these countries lately. I live in Heilongjian China, 70km away from the Russian boarder. The farmers have houses that you probably admire. They have a house with bed rooms, a 40m2 gardens (that some of them actually decorated with beautiful flowers) and own a plot of minimum 500m2 farm land.
Although these ppl are poor by our standard but they are self sufficient and with no aspiration for things we own living in the cities.

With the strengthening of the sg dollar lately, sg low wages strategy of cheap foreign labourer or 'FT' is becoing a joke to ppl who live outside sg who see things outside-in. I always though that the cyclical thinking mentality happen only in underdevelop countries but it sad to see how our leadership in sg keep churning out conflicting policy. If we really want to increase our competitiveness we should be consistence, either lower our wages or lowering our currency. It is so stupid on one hand, lower the salary by 5-10% and or the other hand increase the currency by 5-10% and start telling the world that we want cost of operating in sg competitive!

Sg is attracting alot of riches from PRC, Indonesia and Indian because many them fear their government is robbing their wealth. Many of them actually accumulated their wealth through illegal means or tax evasion. It is well known in the world that sg is not abt to give up it bank secrecy act because that will immediately trigger an exodus of money out from our banking system

What function was that?
The reason is simple.
As Singapore opens her domestic economy to global talent, there will be a global-led pressure on domestic demand (inflation).
But as Singapore workforce is restricted to small domestic market, this inflow of people (competition) will lead to a downward pressure on wage.
