PM Lee justified “realistic” pay policies on U.S. TV
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had openly defended the astronomical salaries of his minister on a U.S. TV Talkshow.
In response to a question posed by Mr Phil Ponce, host of Chicago Tonight if the United States should follow Singapore’s example and pay higher salaries to its politicians and top officials to control corruption, PM Lee said that itwas “imperative” that Singapore got this policy right even as he acknowledged that it was an unpopular issue with voters.
“What can be more responsible than running a central bank in an economy or running an education system where you are not only dealing with billions of dollars, but where if you make a mistake, the livelihood or the future of millions of people will be at stake,” he said.
Chicago was rocked by a sensational corruption scandal a year ago when former Illinois governor Mr Rod Blagojevich was accused of trying to ’sell’ the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.
PM Lee is probably the highest paid Prime Minister in the world. He currently earns about S$3 million dollars a year or more than 6 times the annual salary of U.S. President Barack Obama.
Even a junior Singapore minister earns more than the most powerful man in the world.
Justifying the need for high salaries to get the “best” person in the government, PM Lee added:
“……You want the best person, and you want him to be properly motivated and focused on his job and not based on revolving door.”
PM Lee and his colleagues are expected to receive a massive 8.8 percent pay hike this year on the back of the improving economy.
An unknown percentage of their multi-million salary package is pegged to GDP growth

It is obviously good and proper to have high salaries.
This is to attract and retain talent.
In itself, this policy is not wrong.
I believe this policy should not be attacked.
Perhaps this issue surface only as a proxy for other more pertinent issues.

So, they are unaware that the things they have said have become a laughing stock or a joke to the world.

It's what you get when someone occupies the throne for 50 years and installs his relatives and cronies into power.
It always ends up with shit.

I think you are mising the point......it is not about attracting or retaining Talent that forumners are complaining. We are not talking about person making 100K - 200K a year. We are talking about 500K and above to exceeding a million justification in Civil Servant and ministers.Forget about private sector or fareness in any aspect just make the relevant to the lowerest hourly wages made in Singapore properly about $5 or less.
Than you compare the spread.

$4 million....his salary might be above that,,,,,,,everyone knows never to ever reveal the true salary..if its high..convince others that its low and value for $$$.
most global companies in spore and even public sectors in spore dont pay that much....what did pm do yesterday???or last week?or last month?its a self imposed salary like self imposed medals on a military uniform.....anyone can put a medal on his uniform...but was it authorised in first place by anyone and does he look like a clown with it?
what does he mean the livlihood of millions are at stake????the livlihood was already wiped out from the start and the future might see these people living in poverty or starvation.by the time that comes...he wont be pm already.....the next pm will take over while he is sipping coktails by the pool in his ultra large mansion by the beach in Los Angeles with his son!

the mexican government has economy made outa big MNC and everyone there has not enough money even if they werked fer intel etc??in spore...its almost the same...everyone hasnt ebough $$$ even if they werked for big MNC for years!!!
PM lee is just a spoilt brat...thats why obama probably asked reporters to interview asking him if his salary is even wortth 1/10 the amount even!!what did he do??produce factories that make a $billion /year??did he make anything so far????!!!

the max would be smoked camphor duck and cold crab legs salad....no rice or potato ever needed...just eat food only.:)

True....
I mean if i have problem,whether it is attitude problem or whatever,i will get screwed when working or interact with ppl.Even in forum,i will get banned or ignored.(luckily now,my problem is not that big,compare to the past.
And it is recent year that i have some problem)But for LKY n LHL,we Singaporeans have no way to screw them when they have problem.And yet,we must tolerate all the unreasonable policies that impose on us.Its not like if a person got problem,u can screw him or ignore him.We have no where to run.
So,if some ppl here dont like me,its ok.Coz there are always LKY n LHL n their dogs that are more hated by the ppl than me.
