SINGAPORE: Some lower income families were in for a treat on Saturday. About 450 members from lower income families from the Pasir Ris-Punggol area received gift bags containing essential items worth S$40.
Giving the bags out at the Singapore Flyer were Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean and grassroots leaders.
The Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped gave massages and Institute of Technical Education (or ITE) students provided manicure services at the event.
Organised by the People's Association Youth Movement, the event was designed to allow youth volunteers to connect with the community. - CNA/vm
Not a lot but it is a bonus. If they wanna give, I'll take.
WAH!!! Sibei Tua. :D
could someone list out here that essential items?
eg. rice,salted fish,salt ,pepper,instant noodles,dead mouse etc??
i want to really gauge how much its worth and what they are giving.....they are really giving too little indeed for 40 bucks!
ahhh. see this is where you guys are wrong. you guys donno where the money come from.
most of the time when involved with volunteer groups, money comes from fund raising by the volunteers. like old clothes, newspaper collection drives. then fund collected is distributed by means of groceries. so how much do you expect the volunteers to raise? if u think $40 too little, next time when there is a donation or collection drive, give more la.
Depends on how you look at it
To some of these families, every single cent counts and $40 is quite a big bonus
If your whole family survive on $300 a month, $40 is like 13% extra
Govt gives, just take lah, wait for christmas ar??? Take or dun take also hv to pay and pay, might as well take lor.
Shit! me missed the event.
Can the angel7030 be serious with its attempt to offer any intelligent opinions in this Speaker's Corner, or has it not been an established character flaw with its idiocy and frivolity in every thread that it had shown its clear intention to provocate responses that will drive all attention to its own controversial idiocy only ?
The agenda of this Taiwanese 'hum' was very clearly stated by itself - ‘to make sure the audience moving/divert toward you’ (*1)
This is an OPEN statement to all participant in this Forum - to resist and ignore the idiocy of this 'angel7030' and not to indulge this 'hum' from Taiwan in useless exchanges that stretch into multiple pages to drive the thread off-track.
The persistence of the Taiwanese 'hum' to post its irrelevant and irreverent idiocy is to drive the thread off-track.
Its declared agenda is to draw the attention of any participant to engage with its idiocy - so as to pile up the pages in the thread with nonsensical exchange with itself - and the thread being ignored.
wha, uncle here only u and me, where got audiences
Not enough?
You want 3 meals in the hawker centre, food court or restaurant?
I don't think $50 would also be enough, or $100 or $1000 or... so on and so forth.
Those low income families will be around for a long time, and the gift bag is worth $1,000,000 to lift them out of the low income band, then I will stop work and join the low income band, too.
$1,000,000 enough or not? I think not enough, can also finish quite fast.

Yes, money is never enough.
They will want more and more with an "entitlement" mentality.
Why work so hard, when so much money can just drop on your lap for doing next to nothing.
You give them $50, they want $100.
You give them $1,000,000. They will want $2,000,000.
But enough about about our politicians.
This thread is about the poor and needy.
Market rate for low income families is about $5 per hour of work.
$40! Full day of work you know anot!
$40 worth of goods .. Wow.. that's a lot for a street beggar.
I wonder how many hours of propaganda speech they have to sit through ?
You know like those Time Share presentations ?
A few perspective on Giving......
First of all $40 dollars ain't much so don't have to boost to the media....... Cow Cart wheeler is not faster or better.
Secondly folks who are poor don't have to be reminded they are poor....if the govt truly want to help create minimum wage for lower income earner to have a respectable living.
Thridly if you truly are giving food. Considered nutritional value that improved body and brain functioning that help them to think and contribut food that generate energy rather than instant noodle which does more harm than good.
Here is an example of 1 US food bank.....that give out once a month thru private donation.
1) A huge 5.8 lbs frozen Turkey breast
2) a dozen of eggs
3) 2 bags 16oz Walnut
4) 1 pine of frozen orange concentration
5) 2 cans of pasta sauce
6) 2 cans of corn
7) 1 can of Pinto beans
8) 2 cans of Green beans
9) 1 can of tuna
10) 1 pkg of 2 lbs Spaghetti
Whats in the $40 dollars gift bag?
All I know is that I would rather be a new citizen than the poor in Singapore.
Can join Amazing Races sponsored with 10 million dollars of taxpayer money.
how low is lower?
frankly, you can hardly buy anything with $40 nowadays.
its sad when it was reported poor families actually ate instant noodles for all 3 meals.
some even resorted to drinking lots of water to rid themselves of hunger. its expecially sad when it happens to kids.
yet our govt lost billions in investments.
what is the purpose of such investments? to make more money? what difference does it make to CITIZENS whether our reserves is 200 billion or 200 trillion?
