Just watched some videos on parliamentary debates in other democracies via temasekreview.com.
You know, in singapore, we grow up here without ever watching any parliamentary debates live. So we are conditioned to think that this is normal and it's ok if we don't watch the process on how these MPs improve the workings of Singapore.
And I realised a few years back that our so called "debates" in parliament are actually scripted beforehand. MPs have to submit their questions a few weeks before the parliament sessions so that the relevant MPs may craft their replies.
Shouldn't we citizens be allowed to participate, watch and listen to debates in parliament? Or are we just peasants who leave the running of the country to these MPs and just do their bidding if they say so.
Something's seriously lacking in this political system of ours.
its not what they say, but how they say it.
its as hell as boring to listen and watch these old fogeys speak english, really.
that means u r not a politics kind of person lol. No matter how boring, the truly interested will listen intensely.
what politics are there in parliament, when all are PAP and only 2 are in opposition.

If only those two from the alternative parties in Parliament - had the support from dedicated researchers and specialist advisers, they could have been more productive in Parliament.
Then again, what we see is what we are allowed to see in Parliament.
The only way for us to know what the real action is - will be to attend the public gallery during the Parliamentary sessions.
I have watched the Aussie parliament before on tv, very lively, witty and interesting. lots of attack, colourful language used, and the heckling and whistling.
Singapore needs to built up politcal cultures....
Example....Television Talk show to openly discussed the dyanmics of singapore politics and not be fear of prosecution.
The ideas about debate is to be able to raise question on issues that deemed inside the "Ring" and discussed it outside openly. but not necessary interferring decision. Only our PAP has no confident and fear of public opinon that are afraid in openly discussed agenda.
to add:
Worst still within party member they are not allow to speak against the ideas.

The PAP Members of Parliament used to heckle at JBJ - each and every time he stood up to speak the truth that cuts LKY's Cabinet.
A Parliamentary Disciplinary Committee was set up by the Speaker of Parliament - who is himself a PAP MP - and with the majority of the Committee formed by PAP MPs who formed the almost 98% of the Parliamentary members.
The outcome was obvious.
This is petty politics Singapore style - brought down to the lowest personal levels of the Master who set the standards and tone of Parliamentary performance.
Is our standard high in quality ?

Not only are PAP MPs not allowed to speak against the ideas - they are also forced by their 'Party Whip' to follow party instructions to cast their supporting votes for their Party's policies even if their constituents do not agree.
They have to prostitute their own political conscience and obligations for the sake of keeping their political position.

Health Minister had to stand up to answer this one.
Because no other minister wanted the burden and scrutiny of a wrong answer.
and the worst thing is......issues are already decided before its tabling in parliament! Eg ministerial salaries, gst, erp hikes etc.

They decide.
We can chitchat about it.
That's the way things work.

No more "Uniquely Singapore".
It's "Your Singapore" now.
I reckon with the satirical use of that "unique" term, they decided to do away with it and come up an equally unimpressive new tagline.
People should start using "Your Singapore" from now onwards.
Eg. "Your Singapore" is increasing charges again, "Your Singapore" flat prices are hitting the million dollar mark soon.

So when is "Our Singapore"?
