After opening the floodgates and allow Singapore to be swarmed by foreigners without any proper screening or planning, Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng is now urging “Singaporeans to be realistic and more tolerant of foreign workers.”
During his speech on the Budget, Mr Wong said:
“Singaporeans need to be realistic and fair-minded. While we want foreign workers to do the less pleasant jobs and contribute to our economy, we cannot also expect them to stay away, during their off days, from public places and shopping malls where we frequent, or not to take public transport to work.”
The foreign talent and immigration issues have become hot topics of late with many Singaporeans voicing their unhappiness and anger against the ruling party for its misguided policies.
Though Singapore needs foreign workers to take up jobs shunned by locals, the onus is on the government to beef up the infrastructure to ensure that it is adequate to accommodate the increase in population.
Due to poor planning and lack of foresight, too many foreigners are allowed into Singapore within too short a period of time, leading to overcrowding at public spaces and transport.
Mr Wong claimed that foreigners contribute to Singapore’s economic growth “which have raised the quality of life for all Singaporeans.”
According to a UBS report released last year, Singapore has the lowest domestic purchasing power and wages among the Asian Tigers and have a standard of living comparable to Russia. (read article here)
It is ranked by the Economist Unit as the 53th best place to live in the world below the likes of Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia and Canada.
“Economic growth has also enabled us to accumulate reserves in good times, which we have been able to rely on to sustain and support Singaporeans during lean and tough times,” he added.
Singapore’s two sovereign wealth funds Temasek Holdings and GIC was reported to have lost billions of dollars of reserves in failed overseas investments, the exact amount loss remains a mystery to this very day.
Mr Wong ended his speech by reminding Singaporeans that “the integration of foreigners and new immigrants is an ongoing journey and takes a long time.”
“It cannot be rushed. It needs the directive and active involvement of both Singaporeans and new immigrants,” he was quoted as saying in the Straits Times.
Since this is so, why then did the PAP accept so many foreigners at the same time which makes it even more difficult to integrate them now as they tend to congregate within their own communities?
Mr Wong should be more realistic and not expect Singaporeans who are one of the most tolerant people in the world to make unnecessary sacrifices anymore to pay for the juvenile mistakes made by the PAP.
Shouldnt Gan Lim Yong be talking about this?
Wong Kan Seng is not aware that the MRT station stop the foreign workers from loitering in MRT station. Singaporeans are not treated with fair mind, Mr Wong want the local people to be fair-minded. Absurd.
This is the very minister who should keep his mouth shut, coz he has the least credit for being a coward and shamelessly continue to sit in that position, when the most dangerous terrorist related to Singapore, escaped during his watch.
He still has the cheek to sit there and continue to talk nonsense.
Is this the joke of the month??? asking singaporeans to be realistic??? if Singaporeans are realistic, long long he should resign from his post already...all these Gan and Kan all tio kans wnat lah..pardon me as a lady.

you should also realized that this is the only govt in the world to ask its citizen to lower expectation....try telling it to the Union in the States they go on Strike....
and how on earth do we expect productivities to improve?
Ask WKS can he tolerate illegal gatherings of SIngaporeans or foreign talents? KNS... Still not referring back to his letting Mas Selamat escape fiasco yet.
double post
They are all expecting the born in Singapore people to cooperate with them to let them have their ways to give their best to the foreigners.
So we are "unrealistic and unfair-minded"? I don't see asking for a job or better pay to survive in our own country is being unrealistic or too demanding.
Coming from someone who rarely takes public transport, they have no right to comment on it.

Coming from someone who FAILED in his job as home minister (by letting the most dangerous criminal of our times escaped under his nostrils), and still holds that ultra-cushy job without accountability, he has absolutely no right to open his mouth.
He should just shut his trap.
On the other hand we can reply to govt to understand on the productivities level in Singapore....ha ha ha

And we have a population that refuse to wake up. To continue getting their blood sucked, and STILL vote for the bloodsuckers.
I don't know, I don't have much faith in my fellow countrymen.
I am living away from Singapore for the past 4 years. I find it very strange that govern or ministers in this country would not admit to their mistake, not making any correction and instead blame the ppl and ask them to live with the mistake. Even in communist state PRC , this type of attitude will turn into riot. (because the ppl will demand a apology and compensation.
We Singaporean gather very often while working aboard. I can attest to the quality of the ppl we associate with. Singaporean are known to be rationale, prefessional and high in integrity which help us to land the job we have. However, it cant be that the ppl that are governing are so different at home.
They are over confident that they will win every election to allow them the courage to do as they please to the Singapore born people. The locally born Singaporeans do not have the gut to vote against them. Most are enjoying the life in Singapore claiming that there are no war, riot and natural disasters in Singapore as part of the credit by the government.

Local born Singaporeans take it easy when they are abused in words by the Ministers. We have great Singapore citizens supporting every word and movement of the Ministers.
Have you ever encounter anyone who worry what will happen if PAP loses the election?

Don't worry. The more they bring in FTs, the more they will group together & grow into majorities w/ power, riots will start, BY THEM.
I tried to be realistic with your pay package but I just tolerant it.
Foreign workers are ok,coz we do need foreign workers to fill in jobs that Singaporeans dont want to do.
But then, not so many like what it is today.
As to foreign immigrants, frankly speaking,Singapore is too small to house so many foreign immigrants. Our country is not as big as Australia,America n Canada. They have the "quantity n quality" to invite foreign talents n immigrants, but not us.
Even Britain,New Zealand n Taiwan are much larger compare to Singapore.
In Japan when ministers make a big mistake they go on national TV to apologise in tears (genuine or not that is another story) and then step down from their post.
In Singapore they wont need to apologise or step anywhere. They just go home and laugh at their own mistakes to tears.
WKS is no longer credible after the MS fiasco. He can chide Singaporeans perhaps majority of Singaporeans are no more credible than him by constantly voting PAP without thinking!

Foreigners are not doing the unpleasant JOBS.... They are taking up the directors and executive roles of many companys.......
Does Mr Won Refer to foreigners from Out of space.... Clearly Mr Won shown no interest for the benefits of singaporeans......
Singaporeans are very tolerant what.
Of huge mistakes made by ministers.
Otherwise, quite a fair bit of them would have to quit already.

Actually, no. No one in my circle believe PAP will lose the election.Singaporean overseas are very interested with development at home. Living away from home often make our heart fondle and whenever we gather, we talk endlessly abt things at home. We enjoy the 'Singlish' together.
I dont think we are pro or against PAP but when the issues of foreign FT are raised and liberal migrant policy that the govern promote, it make everyone angry in the the group.

It is ok if they have the capability to take on exective or CEO job. At least, to me, they must have something to reach time and we will not be jealous abt them being in Singapore.
The story is diff if we have tech, mech, sales, clerks ..mid level job that are filled by foreigner where surely Singaporean is more productive, educated and most of them, the right working attitude to take these jobs.
We dont need the Indian and Bangal for these positions.
