PAP MP Baey Yam Keng promises to raise residents’ concerns in Parliament to “change” policies
PAP MP Baey Yam Keng, who just conducted a dialogue session with Tanjong Pagar residents at Queenstown library last Saturday, had promised to raise their concerns in Parliament tomorrow to effect “changes” in the government’s policies.
The three most important concerns on the minds of residents are low wages of Singapore workers, sky-rocketing HDB flat prices and escalating healthcare costs.
Many residents complained to him that HDB flats are getting too expensive and suggested HDB to lengthen the period of residency to 10 years before the flat can be sold.
On Ministry of Health allowing Singaporeans to use Medisave to pay for treatments at selected Malaysian hospitals, some residents expressed their worries that this is an indication that MOH has no intention of providing good and affordable healthcare to Singaporeans.
Mr Baey claimed he would bring up the issues mentioned in Parliament:
“Though it (dialogue) may not solve the problems of the residents, but through it, we had managed to change some existing policies,” he was quoted as saying by Shin Min Daily.
With due respect to Mr Baey, while he may be genuinely interested in the welfare of his residents, his hands are tied in Parliament because of the Party Whip.
Major decisions and policies are usually discussed and implemented behind closed doors with little discussion or debate with the MPs, let alone Singaporeans.
More than often not, a decision was already made before the matter was put to Parliament for the MPs to “discuss”. For example, PM Lee had already decided to build the two integrated resorts in Singapore way back in 2005, but the issue was still “debated” in Parliament when the end result was clear.
The PAP has been governing Singapore for too long without any opposition in Parliament to check on it. While this facilitates the speedy decision-making and implementation of policies, it can also result in terrible blunders like the “stop at two” policy in the 1970s and the present liberal immigration policies.
It is quite pointless and senseless to have 82 PAP MPs pretending to “debate” in Parliament” when they all have to vote along party lines in the end.
Unless the PAP is denied its traditional two-thirds majority in Parliament, such “wayangs” will continue. Unfortunately for Mr Baey, he is merely a “dummy” in the great PAP “orchestra” conducted by none other than its “Dear Leader” Lee Kuan Yew who said in 2008:
“To be the prime minister, you don’t have to know every instrument, but you got to recognise, ah, he’s a good violinist, he’ll be the first violinist, he’ll be the double bass. He will play the viola, he will have the trumpet, he will do the drums. Then you coordinate them and then you have great music. And if you already have a great orchestra, you can put a dummy there and you still got great music.”

Let's hear it from the "gay". Om pum pum pum pum
baey kan king.. going against the MIW when he's the MIW?
maybe he really baey kan?
If Mr Baey truly has the interests of the people in his heart, he should speak for the people regardless of whether he is tied by the party rules - that will be a noble act itself even if he gets put down by his PAP peers. It's a bit late to realise the dissatisfaction on the ground, but good luck to him anyway.

A person with real good intent will not trumpet before the masses.
It's obviously a ploy by the state media to tell the masses that PAP MPs do "care" for their people.
Yes, they can certainly help with your matters on school grants, noisy construction sites, application for top schools, exemption for NS...
Election time is almost near.
Ministers and now even MPs are starting to make themselves visible to their constituents.

That Ah Bay trying to act and show concern only, back in office, he will be cleaning his golf club and practicing putting. Goodness gracious, singaporean, especially those lower to middle class one are just to naive and get tricked very years...in taiwan, we already throw banana skin and rotten eggs at them liao...talk so much for what..
talking about identity issues and food museum in parliament when people are starving as seen on the ch8 variety show every monday night, is certainly bollocks.
that's only the lower 5%, as a demorcratic society, the govt will only look at the majority 80% able ones, majority wins ya
PAP need a longer period to prepare for this election. The ground sentiment is not appropriate now and if they call at this time it will be suicidal. On the other hand, if they dont call now, with only 2.5% unemployment which actually is a full employment, they will miss the best time for the election caused the world economy is likey to deteriorate with the world likely to enter inflation cycle.
I guessed they are in dilemma and are trying to gather more information from the ground. They will put all the administrative and legal process for the election in place and will immediately call for the election once they can decide the best of the worst timing.
They are still concern over the large number of unemployed Singapore citizens who will definately vote against them, the expected high number of dissent young voters and the undecisive middle class voters whose growing dissafisfaction will take them away to the opposition.
even if ur talking about 5% of the population, it still goes a long way towards boosting the country's GDP if these people have meaningful employment.
and for pete's sake, if majority wins, then this is not singapore.

if they call it next year, heavier sentiments will build on. My hunch is on an election this year, maybe after national day rally where they announce some goodies. In 2006, shortly before the election, voters were asked to verify their details in the election register. Now, they are calling for us to update before March 8. Hmm something's brewing.
well, they can alway change the name to Singdollarpore if wanted it, and for mary's sake, they are there because majority voted them. Common sense will tell you why take care of the diminishing and pathetic 5% when you can squeeze alot more from the rest 95%. That's how the human brain works. The rest are just hollywood stuff ya.
To identify "problems" is easy but to solve them need "Brains". MPs are paid big bucks to convey "problems"... Are we paying good money for their service? Where is the productivity?
The ability to push back the problem back to you is a skill, that is why they are highly paid, because they can do it. Just like delegation, if you are a good delegator, you dun hv to work much, and yet get good paid.
early in the morning, somebody start to give old aunties story!
