The Government Gazette has published the boundaries of altered polling districts for the 14 group representation constituencies (GRCs) and nine single-member constituencies (SMCs) here.
However, with the announcement by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong last year that the number of SMCs will be increased, the boundaries will be subjected to further changes after the amendment of Singapore’s Constitution and Parliamentary Elections Act.
The registry of voters was updated a day earlier, leading to speculations that election may be held soon.
The electoral boundaries were often released only in the last minute before nomination day to throw the preparation of the opposition off guard.
The opposition can be doing grassroots work at a particular constituency only to find it suddenly “vanish” into thin air just on the eve of the general election.
For example, Singapore People Party’s Chairman Sin Kek Tong had been active in the SMC of Braddell Hill for six years after garnering a respectable 47 per cent of the votes in the 1991 general election only to find it being “absorbed” into Marine Parade GRC subsequently.
With public anger against the ruling party at an all-time high, the next election may become a watershed in the history of modern Singapore.
Singaporeans should expect the usual rampant gerry-mandering again when the time comes and should not be surprised if they find themselves voting in a different constituency compared to the last election, assuming they get the chance to vote at all.

To be fair to the pple and the opposition party, it should not be altered in the last min.

In a sign that elections may be called anytime soon, the ruling party has updated the registers of voters again for the second time within a year to include the new immigrants who took up Singapore citizenship last year.
The revision will enable the names of new voters to be entered in the appropriate registers.
There were 20,153 new citizens in 2008 and their names have already been included in an earlier update in February last year. The present revision will include new citizens in 2009, whose numbers is not known yet.
Faced with a potential voter backlash over some of its misguided policies, the ruling party has been desperately trying to shore up its support base by “persuading” PRs to take up Singapore citizenship.
According to unverified feedback from the ground, some PRs are not having their status renewed – they were told in no uncertain terms either to become Singaporeans or returned to where they came from.
As new citizens will most likely vote for the ruling party, the increase in the number of new citizens will dilute support for the opposition.
The ruling party has gone out of its way to woo the newcomers including PRs. A mega $10-million Community Integration Fund was unveiled last year to make the immigrants feel “welcomed” in Singapore.
New citizens and PRs are being roped into grassroots organizations which are described as “part of the PAP” by its strongman Lee Kuan Yew lately. No efforts were spared by the media to portray the measures taken by the ruling party to “integrate” the new citizens.
Due to the ruling party’s liberal immigration policies, foreigners now make up 36 per cent of Singapore’s population, up from 14 per cent in 1990. Of the remaining 64 per cent who are citizens, an increasing number are born overseas.
Assuming the average number of new citizens per year since 2006 is 20,000, they may contribute nearly 100,000 new voters in the next election, more than enough to sway votes in favor of the ruling party in closely fought contests.
With few credible leaders in the opposition camp, the ruling party is likely to romp home to another electoral victory with or without the help of the new citizens.
New sporean will be proud to vote for the country.

My area probably, if I am not wrong, walkover.
So, even say marine parade has a strong support of opposition, if walkover...all finish liao. Opp cannot vote.
Can we try military government like thailand if every area is walkover??
Not allowing people to vote is insane....
not tat SAF is tightly controlled by govt, but think abt it the conscript system makes it ppl rather to come out and stand in election

If singaporean are united and most S...oF are from singaporeans, SoF , Police and Navy and airforce can combine to overthrow the government....
This will be just like how thailand was prevented from another 1 richman powerhouse in the government.....thailand has more democracy now thanks to its new military government.
This is unlikely to happen as sg is not united.
