Working long hours really don't mean anything.
Take ministers' salaries for example.
Even if they work 0 hours or 8000 hours a year, they will still get a salary that is pegged at a percentage of the top private sector earners.
In essense, their base salary is dependent on the private sector earners' performance.
It's like Bobby's salary is dependent on hardworking Rachel's salary - whether Bobby works hard or slacks off, he still gets an amount that is pegged to her salary.

You referring to ministers?
As far as I know, a lot of MPs have their own jobs or hold 10 over directorships in other private companies, so many MPs might not have such an easy life.

the duh-rectorships may be in the PM's husband's portfolio.. so they may be "pegged" to other actual duh-rectors' wages, but still slacking off right?

i don't care if he's from outer space, if he wants to deserve a pay like that, he should stop kpkb-ing and get back to work

But they do nothing but collect their director's pay for being listed on those boards. The companies that pay them do not actually expect them to do anything. It's just for the added prestige for the companies , and helps to satisfy the MPs' greed for money at the same time.
You must remember, if MPs were barred from sitting on boards, they will become corrupt and steal from the country instead.

Stop fooling around with your self-sympathy.
It is not the long hours but the job performance of the Million Dollar Minister that is more important.
Based on their job performance, none of the PAP Ministers can honestly justify their ridiculously obscene salaries.
They know it.
We know it.
... and the whole World knows about it.
But these shameless arseholes will never admit it because they are enjoying themselves sucking the blood out of Singaporeans.
Dracula is no match for them.
Both in the past and now, Singapore has problems.
However, many problems are masked by the rapid economic growth.
When the pie becomes larger, everyone gets a larger piece and so no problem.
But now the pie is not becoming larger and even become smaller and in addition
there are more people who want to share the pie. Hence, everyone gets a much
smaller piece of the pie.
It is easy to manage the country when the pie is growing and everyone has a larger
piece, it will be no longer so easy to manage the country when the pie is not
becoming larger or even the pie becomes smaller with more people to share the pie.
Singapore needs a new way of management now.

What about Lee Kuan Yew?
To the one who wrote the article - Khaw works long hours in his capacity as a Health Minister not MP.
As far as I know, MPs in sg hold full time jobs so it is absolutely impossible they work long hours.
Guess the article writer must have got himself herself confused on the differences between ministers and MPs.
How many dedicated and sincerely caring MPs do we have in sg?

Maybe I am wrong but I feel that Lee Kuan Yew doesn't really play up the part of WWII Japanese occupation in Singapore's history.
That is probably due to the role he played during that period.

But such means of rule stifles the people.

From our Correspondent
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said during a speech at Assisi Hospice last night that terminally ill patients should not treat death as a taboo subject.
He was speaking as the guest of honour at Assisi Hospice’s 40th anniversary charity dinner. His wife, Ms Ho Ching, is the patron of the hospice.
PM Lee urged them to discuss with their families and doctors plans for dying with dignity and under the best possible care.
He also said he felt more public education was needed about what hospice and home palliative care can do to provide comfort for patients in their last days.
With medical advances, people are living longer, but with terminal illnesses, lives can be prolonged only up to a point when ‘more aggressive treatment will likely do more harm than good’, he said.
Palliative care is a field of medicine that helps terminally ill patients live the remaining days of their lives with minimal pain and suffering. There are few specialist palliative-care physicians in Singapore.
Singapore’s aging population will put more strain on its public healthcare system which was rated one of the best in the world by the World Health Organization.
Unlike Australia, Canada or the United Kingdom, palliative care is not a recognized specialty in Singapore. The current palliative care physicians are mostly geriatricians or internists whose postgraduate training is in internal medicine.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) is recruiting and training more doctors, nurses and social workers who can provide palliative care which will also be introduced to nursing homes.
Earlier this year, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan caused a furore when he suggested that Singaporeans send their aged parents to live in nursing homes in Johor Baru where medical expenses are lower. It is not sure if there are any hospices in Johor Baru which can accept Singapore patients in the future.
PM Lee urged Singaporeans who are terminally ill to consider end-of-life options
So, should we finish off his mother now?
He must take the lead in this since he proposed the idea of telling people to go and die.
