The ruling party is wooing HDB home owners by giving a one-off property tax rebate of up to $120 to help them cope with the expected increase in the property tax next year following the increase in the annual value of their flats.
The prices of HDB flats have sky-rocketed in the last few months, hitting a record high in June this year.
PRs constitute as high as 40 per cent of the buyers of resale flats, according to a report released by real estate agency ERA.
An Indonesian PR “spoils” the market lately by forking out $653,000 for a 4-room HDB flat in Queenstown which is sufficient to pay for a condominium of similar size in the suburbs.
Though the rebate is likely to be a tiny fraction of the tax increase, it is likely to win much goodwill from the public.
HDB has been trying desperately hard of late to allay Singaporeans’ fear and anxiety over the rising prices of HDB flats by promising to build more new flats to increase the supply.
The rising demand is fueled largely by the influx of foreigners who now make up about 36 per cent of Singapore’s 5-million population.
The ruling party is taking small, but conspicuous measures to “sweeten” the ground before the next election which is due to be called by 2012.
A few weeks before the 2006 election, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced a “Progress Package” which put a few hundred dollars into the pockets of every Singaporean voter.
After the ruling party won the election, GST was increased to 7 per cent not too long after followed by hikes in public transport and ERP.
It may have to spend more efforts this time round to convince Singaporeans to cast their votes for them again.
An increasing number of Singaporeans are getting frustrated and unhappy at the government’s policies, such as its immigration policies.
Prime Minister Lee had said earlier during his National Day Rally speech in August that the inflow of foreigners will “slow” as the economy is not doing well.
With Singapore out of recession, it is unsure if the intake of foreigners will increase again.
Recent public statements made by senior leaders seem to suggest that the government’s pro-foreigner policy is here to stay and Singaporeans have no choice but to live with it.
MM Lee Kuan Yew urged Singaporeans to “bear” with the tide of foreigners which has now become a “flood”.
With no credible opposition to challenge the ruling party, it is almost impossible to vote it out of office.

Standard practice - Increase everything then give you a one off "rebate/subsidy" to make it look like they care.
Yes, you still have to live with the increase in GST and whatnots next year and the years after that.
any "GE is coming "speculation? Anyway, it's to fool those people that they really care. Yes! really care to squeeze you dry.

Before election, it's always the case they will sweeten the ground by saying citizens matter, we will help the poor, I give you this rebate that rebate etc.
But we all know after the elections, they will take everything back through increases in indirect taxes.
If majority of the people still believe their words after getting stung so many times, then I guess they deserve the candidates they voted in.
You will be surprised, Singapore has alot of mentally retarded folks.
Why you think Li Ao (Taiwan) said that Singaporeans are naive politically.

The only medicine that is good for the "hum" is the "hum" medicine.
If you do not know what your stupidity as a "hum" is with your daily childish routine to disrupt any thread with your irrelevant, nonsensical, thoughtless flippant one line statements that has no connection with the Thread - you will be treated with the same treatement as only a "hum" can know.

Only a dumb "hum" will believe that the money returned by the Government is money from their charity.
Here again, you are at your best when you produce your kind of idiocy that prevent you from contributing anything of relevance to the thread.

Singaporeans beware.
Govt has every intention to raise GST to 10%. Most likely it will happen AFTER the next election.
The final target goal is 15%

If you deem it is useless so be it. By the way, who is useful here?

My Goodness!!! Govt needs to woos HDB owners meh??? This title is really out of scope. Beside, who are the owner of HDB, all are leasing from HDB, so HDB is the owner, and as owner, do they need to woos the leasee meh??
If HDB said tomorrow, all conservative charges increase by $20, the most all can do is grumble and grumble, but still have to pay it, there is no two way about it, they dun even have to woos anyone. That is why my logic is, take whatever they give ya.

Hanor.
Coincidently, electricity bills in sg always increase after the F1 race.

If Singaporeans who purchased the HDB flats are not owners, and are only mere lease holders, is the Taiwanese "hum" now exposing the big lie that the PAP has created home ownership for 90 per cent of Singaporeans purchasing HDB flats ?
Is the PAP creating a big lie that the Taiwanese "hum" has the intelligence to expose the truth for what it is ?
Is the Taiwanese "hum" stabbing Singaporean's back and laughing at our stupidity to imagine that Singaporeans are owners of the HDB units - when the reality is in the PAP's deceit that Singaporeans are actually leasing the properties from the HDB ?
The Taiwanese "hum" must be congratulated for being able to tell the reality from inside the tiny cockle shell that its "hum" had probably leased from some cock.

I even heard of something with regards to energy conservation tax. They had some intention to impose a tax on your electricity bill (much like the water conservation tax). Fortunately (in a sense), the credit crisis came. This idea was put on hold.

They will find ways and means to tax you in anything and everything.
The term "Pay and Pay" did not come by out out nowhere.

Did you keep your refrigerator on?
Was it an estimated month, and not a month of actual reading?
So many ways of explaining that.
Energy conservation tax, is similar to the implementation of water conservation tax. They will tax a percentage of what you use. In water's case, it's 30% (and there is a waterborne fee that is almost another 30%, which I do not know what this waterborne fee is about, and thus we pay up to 60% more for every 100% water we use)
