From Thanh Nien News:
Eleven Vietnamese students have been awarded with the Singaporean government’s full undergraduate scholarship totaling US$1.24 million, or about $113,000 each.
The students will leave for Singapore later this month to attend three or four-year programs in the country’s major universities, including the Singapore Nanyang Technological University.
The scholarship recipients were selected on their academic merit, leadership qualities and potential to contribute to community development, according to a Singaporean embassy press release.
The scholarships, first announced at the 6th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998 in the immediate aftermath of the Asian financial crisis to facilitate higher education for outstanding students in affected member nations, has been granted to 155 Vietnamese students thus far.

If they want to do charity work, they should use their million dollar salaries.

Wait until the sun rise up from the north.

the decision to offer scholarships to our neighbours is part of foreign policy.
its not about whose money they are using.

It is hilarious that artistes have to perform and do lame stuff to garner support in donation dollars. Why not the government take about 20% pay cut for a month or so, I believe the amount gathered would be able to support charity organisations for quite some time.

cant, cos ministers will leave for private sector..using their ministerial background, its easy for them to gain employment anywhere.
The 11 viet students will just use this as a stepping stone and say bye bye to sg..
mofos. They dont realize what they are doing..
PApa dont relise that Asean is not Europe. Europe offers such scholarships, being generous ect because they are group of federation that depend on one another.
But Asean is a turmoiled group. And PAPA thinking itself as Europe is just wrong cos in Asean, people tend to be ungrateful

Without knowing the terms and condition behind this scholarship no reason to speculate.
In the late 1990 the State department provided grant for North Vietnames students to study Economics in the States as part of diplomatics gesture. Most of the student return back to Vietnam.
Perharps these scholarship were given so to Seed future diplomatics relationship.

yes, they cant give it to aus, europe or US. Cos they have their own stuff already, so give it to vietnam, a 3rd world country.
everyone does this foreign student scholarship. not only SGP. that means, our students are also given such benefits to study in another country, fully sponsored. at the same time, tax payers' money is also used to give local students scholarships, grants, etc. so we are not exactly losing out here. the article basically singled out the fact that the SGP government is offering a large amount of money to foreign students to study here for free. the intention of the writer could revolve around angering the singaporean public. the power of journalism at work

But their students are heavily subsidized, they dont complain. But in SG, its not.
Old fart wants to punish Singaporeans for daring to challenge his authority.

then let them be. there are millions who would want to take their seats. Its not as if they are talented or we die die cannot lose them. Govt's reason for rewarding themselves unreal pay just isnt convincing enough. Besides, isnt govt always talking about job loyalty? Then they must set a good example to us. Isnt they the one who say that high seniority wages discourage employees from leaving the company and this prevents "new blood"? They are always contradicting themselves.

I think you have forgotten one aspect we do not know if these scholarship are tied to Vietnamese govt...so they eventually become Diplomats or working the the foreign branch of Vietnamese govt....
Not taking any Singapore job....I recall Singapore govt was providing certain assistant to the vietnamese government on modernization my word "seed" was mean to refer to diplomatics relationship between Viet n SG....
Revisiting the topic..it appears reasonable. The intention is for those affected by the asian financial crisis to have access to higher levels of education..
But what's the point of doing all these when your own people are unsettled..
