I am a Chartered Accountant, holding a high pay job in China and returned to Spore every 3-6 months. I live in an apartment in China that every Singaporean can only dream of. It is penthouse located at the 30th floor looking over every corner of the city. I was driven for work and leisure. I have maids that clean the house and do the cooking that taste fantastic and I can look forward to a good meal after a hard day work. On the weekend, I travel to look around either by jets or driven to as long as I can find the most beautiful places around me. Am I lucky ?? BUT I WISH I can be home...because;
1. My Chinese colleagues are far more intelligence and political than whan we Singaporean are. They turn everycorner to find the shortest way for enrichment.
2. They growth up in the most competitive enviironment and will defend their rights (or wrongs) when threatened. This is ok when evey human being will do likewise but you can never imagine a very very trival issue will often spike a roar. As foreigner it best to keep away from trouble least you are 'localised' enough to deal with it.
3. It is much more easy to communicate with Singaporean than local cause you need patience to spend hours listening and communicating to get to the real issue. Chinese colleagues talk only of the real issue after hours spend in communication or dinning.
4. If you are working far in the North China, prepared for the sub zero degree cold where voice freeze and water become ice in second. You are locked in the prison of your home after work in winter.
5. If you enjoy the ease of friendship in Singapore when we can coffee under the moon and dine in round or sqaure table, Chinese still pratice formality of sitting arrangements according to seniority. If you happend to be sitted at the edge of the table last in the ranking, you will be bore to dead keeping your mouth shut.
6. When you decide to go on shopping be sure you know the price least your end up for lowest quality and highest price.
7. If you tend to be kind hearted do practice some charity but often you find out why Chinese dont donate because it end up in the black hole where the money is never being probably accounted for.
8. If you wish to think a dollar is nothing than you will be surprise that you pay many of the same dollar for correction because it is normal for work to be done sub-standard or wrong so that you pay to make it right.
9. Dont preach 'professional' unless you keep the last dollar in your pocket until the work in done to your satisfaction.
10. Dont believe communist is dead when your colleague still believe the party words are the most authoritative. The party secretary is more powerful that the CEO in the company.
11. Forget your Singporean pride when you have no relationship to get you around. Everythings will become a roadblock even to get your house gas or phone working.
12. Dont ever say anything that insult the local nationality because after the 60th year parade, China will rise to become once again the No 1 for everything of the world.
and many more.....

1. My Chinese colleagues are far more intelligence and political than whan we Singaporean are. They turn everycorner to find the shortest way for enrichment.
Are you implying that Singaporeans are more stupid? Don't humankind, anywhere, over the whole world seeks the shortest way to enrich themselves?
2. They growth up in the most competitive enviironment and will defend their rights (or wrongs) when threatened. This is ok when evey human being will do likewise but you can never imagine a very very trival issue will often spike a roar. Aren't our Singaporean's environment as competitive, with the import of India's Indian, China's Chinese and people from SE Asian? I had a class of 25 students, only 5 were Singaporeans, the rest were high-flyers from the region and beyond. Are you implying that Singapore, with it's multi-racial composition, trivial issue can never spark into a roar?
3. It is much more easy to communicate with Singaporean than local cause you need patience to spend hours listening and communicating to get to the real issue. Chinese colleagues talk only of the real issue after hours spend in communication or dinning.
So? In Rome, do what the Roman does!
4. If you are working far in the North China, prepared for the sub zero degree cold where voice freeze and water become ice in second. You are locked in the prison of your home after work in winter.
As if our oven temperature induced siesta is any better!

Singaporean not Chinese? 78% are still Chinese. Seniority is still observed in Chinese household, and may I add, the Indian and Malay households as well.
6. When you decide to go on shopping be sure you know the price least your end up for lowest quality and highest price.
This everywhere, all over the world.
7. If you tend to be kind hearted do practice some charity but often you find out why Chinese dont donate because it end up in the black hole where the money is never being probably accounted for.
Charity is between you and your God. Don't do it or do it because the Chinese are blah blah...
8. If you wish to think a dollar is nothing than you will be surprise that you pay many of the same dollar for correction because it is normal for work to be done sub-standard or wrong so that you pay to make it right.
That is why we call them emerging economies and not matured economies!
9. Dont preach 'professional' unless you keep the last dollar in your pocket until the work in done to your satisfaction.
Follow this advice anywhere in the world, not just in China!
10. Dont believe communist is dead when your colleague still believe the party words are the most authoritative. The party secretary is more powerful that the CEO in the company.
Communism is dead. Communism and power are two different things!.
11. Forget your Singporean pride when you have no relationship to get you around. Everythings will become a roadblock even to get your house gas or phone working.
Why bring Singaporean's pride to a third world county?
12. Dont ever say anything that insult the local nationality because after the 60th year parade, China will rise to become once again the No 1 for everything of the world.
Gee, this sound like a narcissistic remark. Don't we ever feel this way too?
I have no good feeling for the PAP and I will vote against them only if I need to.
I last returned to Singapore in Sept and hate to see that I no longer can affort a proper house where only the riches can buy. I wish to comfort myself and hope I can still buy a HDB when I decide to come home.
I wonder why job advertisements in Singapore is so miserable low in Job DB when you start compare that to Hong Kong.
I dislike paying the 7% (or more now?) VAT when I know much of it contribute to the high wages that the so call 'elite' in the government.
I disagree with the policy that foreign PR will benefit Singapore when many of them compete for jobs at the low or middle income level.
I hate to see the casino in this Singapore when I never seen any casino that dont dpend on the local for business.
BUT, I will choose to come home.

I like yr oxymoron style
Trivial issues on this small island are fully capable of sparking an uproar..
An excellent example..STOMP.
OK, seriously speaking, trivial issues are trivial - like what? Race? Religion? Those are very often silenced and the people involved are usually gagged..

That is a mirage they wants us to believe.
Watch youtube clips on Burmese protest in Singapore. I guess, there were thousands, if not ten of thousands, of Burmese protesters. The police were out numbered and from the clips, they looked scared. Who dared to gag them?
Lame la this guy, either he dreaming or he wan us to be jealous of him. But I am never jealous of someone with
a) Bad English
b) Supports Communism
c) Thinks bad abt Singapore and ass licks some other country

If PAP rule continues, future of Singapore will be doomed.

I have some points to make about the above.
as an Expat myself, I am very surprised by the way you speak of yourself (and the English...), as if you are an inferior person relative to the locals. I truly wonder if you are really in China, but I shall give you the benefit of the doubt.

Is it not pathetic that despite the high pay in a top job as a Chartered Accountant you have no ability to taste the quality of Life in a China that stretches from the urban to the rural, from the coast to the mountains ?
It will take your entire lifetime to appreciate the whole of China, and even with the frequent home trips every 3 to 6 months - you still wish to return home for reasons that are pathetically meaningless in any value.
1. My Chinese colleagues are far more intelligence and political than whan we Singaporean are. They turn everycorner to find the shortest way for enrichment.
You wish you can be home in Singapore...because..... "my Chinese colleagues are far more intelligences and political than whan we Singaporeans are" ?
Are you losing out in the company politics and wish to return home ?
Surely, your survival instinct cannot match your Chinese colleagues, and you are supposed to be in the rarefied position of a Chartered Accountant ?
Obviously no one is indispensable, and it is how you make yourself relevant to your situation and to your employer.
If this basic tenet of life is not in you, can you even survive in Singapore ?
If trivialities can create an uproar, obviously someone must have been petty, or perhaps the value system and culture was not understood.
In every situation in a foreign country, one will need to be "localised" as early as possible, and one will need to build as many "bridges" as possible to speed up the process of being "localised".
3. It is much more easy to communicate with Singaporean than local cause you need patience to spend hours listening and communicating to get to the real issue. Chinese colleagues talk only of the real issue after hours spend in communication or dinning.
Obviously, you have not build your "bridges" early enough, as the trust and openess is not available on first contact.
Few Singaporeans will be gung-ho enough to immerse fully into the local culture, and swim with the local fishes, and identify out the piranhas from the salmons, and from the guppies.
Did you learn to sleep with the "locals" to find out who "snore" and "fart" the loudest ?
4. If you are working far in the North China, prepared for the sub zero degree cold where voice freeze and water become ice in second. You are locked in the prison of your home after work in winter.
Should this not be part of the challenges in working in new environments ?
If you do not have an "Indianna Jones" spirit - obviously you are not in the right job ?
You could make your time there better spent by having a hobby - photography can be one, indoor or outdoor painting could be the other, writing about local life and cultures will surely help you to immerse into the environment and help you to be "localised".
Can you compare a formal setting with an informal settings ?
Are you kidding yourself that formalities do not exist in Singapore ?
Even in petty office politics, when you sit with the bosses, you will give the bosses all the space to open their mouths and play out their acts.
Do you want to steal their spotlight ?
6. When you decide to go on shopping be sure you know the price least your end up for lowest quality and highest price.
Is this not a logical principle anywhere on this planet, where the seller will always want to get the biggest profits ?
This is part and parcel of discovering a new place and become "localised".
7. If you tend to be kind hearted do practice some charity but often you find out why Chinese dont donate because it end up in the black hole where the money is never being probably accounted for.
If you are kind hearted, once it is given, why will you want to know where it goes ?
You maybe a Chartered Accountant for a company, do you still want to be in the same role to account for every cent that you give to charity ?
8. If you wish to think a dollar is nothing than you will be surprise that you pay many of the same dollar for correction because it is normal for work to be done sub-standard or wrong so that you pay to make it right.
There are many ways to write a contract for the local work ethics, if you do not know what the local practices are, get someone who knows to draft it, then get someone else to be responsible to vet it, then you can always be the final one to approve it - but for heaven sake, get someone to administer it - so that when it goes wrong, at least you can fire him and not get yourself fired.
9. Dont preach 'professional' unless you keep the last dollar in your pocket until the work in done to your satisfaction.
Is that not how progress payment should be ?
If your company is a big boy, then carry a big stick.
If your company can pay big money, then control the situation on those who desire so desparately to earn your money.
10. Dont believe communist is dead when your colleague still believe the party words are the most authoritative. The party secretary is more powerful that the CEO in the company.
If you are working for a State Company, it is the State Money that is involved, why will you want to bother how that money is spent as long as you play your role as a Chartered Accountant and the money trail is recorded to protect your position.
11. Forget your Singporean pride when you have no relationship to get you around. Everythings will become a roadblock even to get your house gas or phone working.
Obviously you do not know how to make things work for you, and to know when is the right time to use or not to use the "Power of $$$$".
12. Dont ever say anything that insult the local nationality because after the 60th year parade, China will rise to become once again the No 1 for everything of the world.
and many more.....
One must be insane to say anything that insult the local nationality - whether there is any grand anniversary parade or not.
China will be No 1 only when they can find continuous and successive lines of good leaders similar to President Hu and Premier Wen - and with each successive leadership team paying attention to grow a modern, efficient, dedicated, incorruptible and loyal Civil Service throughout every province that will submit itself and support the Central Government in every way.
At the present stage, the provincial governments that are thriving economically can get distracted by new found wealth and the good life, and forget their political and social responsibilities - and succumb to corruption.
Such provinces are those that are furthest from the Central Government in Beijing.
Grand parades and huge celebrations of anniversaries will not help China to advance - but economic progress, sound political practices that give the Citizens a voice and control over the future of the Country will surely help China to grow.
