If Raffles was only working for his own riches, why would he made Singapore a free port? He could have just collected taxes like the Dutch did back then? He made Singapore a free port and so the people who came to Singapore might benefit from trading with each other in Singapore. And as a result, population shot up and as a result, the trading volume way surpasses Penang, the popular port during that period in mid 1820s.
If Raffles was selfish, why was he unhappy that Farquar allowed licences for gambling and opium? He considered those social ills. He could have just happily collected taxes from those. But he did not.
If Raffles was selfish, why was he unhappy with Farquar whom he sees is leaving Singapore in a disarray. He came up with the City organisation plan to organise the citizens. If he was selfish, why care abt how the citizens felt?
So did our colonial masters really cared only for themselves?

With no opposition in Parliament, the ruling party is given complete power and autonomy to govern the nation as it likes. Singaporeans are completely under the mercy of the PAP. Unless there is a change in status quo, Singaporeans should be mentally prepared to live with more foreigners in their midst in the future.
I refer to the above, I don't agree with the first statement. We now have oppositions in the parliament, what have these oppositions contributed? From what I see with or without these current oppositions in parliament make no difference. As long as PAP is in power, nothing will change for the better for us, changes are meant for their benefits
