Farnee right? Can win 80/81 seats (98.7% of seats) with only 63% votes. Powderful.
Next elections due by 2011. Whats your predictions??
discuss..
does this mean that if PAP has a vote percentage of LESS than 50%, will they have the minority amount of seats???
cause if you think... less than 50% favour, and still got 95%+ majority of seats. Funny right??

Don't worry, for the coming election with all the new citizens voting for the incumbent party, their popularity will soar again.
Really.

next elections due by 2011. whats your predictions??
with the GRC machinery, PAP will sweep almost all seats again. Opposition will gain some ground but still PAP controls almost all seats.
Perhaps, 78 out of 82 seats with 60% majority is my take.
IT is obvious that their winning percentage is declining. In other countries, the ruling parties will be doing something to find out what has gone wrong and garner more votes, but in sg it is not so.
My prediction for the next election: below 66.6%. If they are lucky they may get slightly a higher percentage due to the new citizens here.
Ohsheet, are you sure the winning percentage was 75% in 2001? I thought I saw a different figure the last time.

this one is wikipedia one.. so its ppl contribute. hahaha
imo should be accurate ba. I rmber it was one time the % shot up, then went down.
ya.. was thinking that too. cause of new citizens, confirm they brainwashed to vote for pappy. But if considering from 2006... got lots of sagas against pappy, and i hope that voters will take those into consideration.
waaaa. if not they like tht buy votes. KNN!

The figure should be just right.
2001 was the dot com crash together with Sept 11, so they used the "uncertain future and needed strong leaders" rationale to appeal to the voters if I can recall correctly.

If economy good - say they are responsible for the growth.
If economy bad - say country needs stable and proven government to lead the country out of recession.
It's standard practice.
Now you know.

It's the same fucking PAP propaganda. Over and over.
May be if they run election this year, they may likely win with greater percentage. They can claim that this is recession and in the past they have managed to help people deal with recession.. They have all the experience handling it unlike the opposition without any experience at all. With this, I am sure those kiasu kiasi sinkies will surely go all the way to vote them in again.

Have you looked at the number of registered voters in the Electoral Roll, the size of the citizens and the population that existed in those election years ?
For Election 2006, the population size was approximately 4.5 million.
The registered voters had numbered: 2,147,840 citizens - (which is 47.72% of the total population).
The total number of votes counted was only 1,123,273 reflecting the participation of this number from the registered voter lists - (which is 52.29% of the registered voters, or 24.96% of the Total Population).
From the total number of votes counteed - the PAP received only 748,130 votes, while the Alternative Parties received 375,143 votes.
The final results indicate that the PAP received 66.6% of the total votes counted but only 34.83% of the registered list of voters, or 16.62% of the Total Population.
Consider this with the recently concluded election held in Indonesia, which land size is spread across 1000 plus big, medium and small islands and a total population size that is 240,271,522 people (*1)
It has a list of registered voters that numbered 171,265,442 citizens (*2) - (which is 71.28% of the Total population).
The total vote counted was 104,099,785 votes (*3) - which is 60.78% of the registered voter lists, or 43.32% of the total population.

woah..
Thanks man! hmm.. i understand it now. so only like 16% of the population voted for PAP and THEY CAN GET MAJORITY.
WALAO EH WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
okok.. really informative.
Its really weird how a country can be ruled with only 16% in favour of the ruling party...
thanks again atobe
so... the figures that PAP releases are very dodgy leh.
if it means by this : for example...2006: won 45 of 47 contested seats, with 66.6% of the vote.
that means that its 66% of the number of people who voted. and not the whole population.. right?

Do take note though, in 2006 only 47 seats were contested, the other 20 are walkovers. So the data in fact does make sense. They won 66% if the contested seats. The rest they already hold power. The only one that seems flawed is the 1988 data from wikipedia.
I believe figures like that can be manipulated.
Don't forget the Election Dept is under the charge of the PM who is a PAP member. So So . . .. .
