Awww....I am so touched by the fillal piety here for our aged pensioners.
So where are your solutions instead of Dr Khiaw's to show our deepest respect, concern and well being for them when they grow old and need a place to stay, for those who have no families or abandoned by their young who fled overseas for greener pastures?

Standard of living is how good a living we have
Cost of living is how costly the living we have.
They are 2 different things
High Cost of living does not equal high standard of living and vice versa.
I really dun agree but for the sake of this thread, and to set the record straight, I was refering to the COSTS of living... thanks.
Let's focus on the line of thought not the English...

You will have to agree, coz that term MUST be corrected.
It's not a matter of English. It's more a matter of people understanding what you are trying to convey.
Standard of living is the ease (or difficulty) by which people living in a country satisfy their want.
Cost of living is the cost of maintaining a certain standard of living.
By all means, what you were trying to convey was about the cost of living.
My CFO once made an English glaring mistake, by using the word "oversight", over "oversee" in a global publication. I had a friend who used "entrails" over "entails"
Slight difference in spelling, miles of difference in meanings.
Dear All,
Thanks for sharing with me the links to that "hoo-ha" story..., I think it was a mistake made by our Minister. If aged people are "forced" to live and seek treatment outside Singapore in places like Malaysia, Philipines or Thailand, the government is not doing a good enough job.
These people, said by the government themselves, helped build our nation; and now that they are no longer the most productive group, they are in a way discriminated against, and "forced" to live far away from their children, feeling lonely, helpless (especially if there is language barrier) & probably deserted.
Special provisions should be created to cater this group's needs. May be 5-10% of the Ministers' pay? Okay, we make it 100% tax deductible and call it the Ministers' Aged Fund. Jokes aside, if they can do this & LHL can champion this, I am sure this will leave a good taste amongst Singaporeans.
xtreyier, will you volunteer to live in JB in your show of support to Minister Khiaw?

The grass is always greener on the other side...
Lionaosis, soul_rage has a point in choice of terms. Anyway let's put that aside.
My opinion, you may find Singapore better to stay, but there will also be people who find other countries better to stay in. It's always a matter of preference ;)
For me, as I know Sg's system well enough, I can earn and survive very comfortably... and I'm probably among the top few percent in salary terms among my age group (25~29), even though my engine haven't been turned up to 100% yet... Source: http://www.salary.sg/2009/benchmark-your-monthly-pay-by-age-gender-2009/
To say the truth, I wouldn't know if I can do a repeat performance in any other countries... Afterall, I made use of the system to my advantage at the moment...

Thank you eagle for clarifying my stand.
Lionoasis, no offence meant, but as i mentioned the choice of terms is impt.
Anyway, the above is why I respect your views.
Both camps (satisfied, unsatisfied with singapore) should be sensible enough to hear the views of the other camp.
xtreyier is someone who is demonstrating a negative example of how someone who loves Singapore should not behave.

You may wanna try other places, if you are that young, you should not stay in the comfort zone. Nonetheless, I am not saying you give up everything and start afresh elsewhere, but it is worth to try out other coutries for exposure/ opportunities. Speaking from personal experience and I hear the same from fellow Singaporeans, living abroad have broadened their perspectives, and this can only be good for one.
I will probably experience cultural differences when I return home, but I am glad of this difference.

No offence taken whatsoever, we are always learning. But just to clarify, the terms meant the same things when I took my Economics 101 some 30 years ago, but luckily enough, I didn't flunk my course..hahaha.

I have done both Immersion Programme and Student Exchange Programme in Germany at NUS... which is the reason for my earlier post on Germany ;)
It will be really tough to try other countries at the moment as I have built up too many things here at the moment, both financially and emotionally. Awaiting your sharing of cultural differences. :)
Interesting bit: Germans brush teeth in the morning after breakfast, not before.

If you can't find the information you're looking for in an existing SO thread, feel free to start a new one with your query/queries. I'm sure the regulars in that forum will be more than happy to answer them.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. I may just do that, if I have the time. See, I have encountered too many crap talkers and wannabe political anal-ysts..., and just feel too frustrated to share these days. Eg. Angel7030 is one of the forumers I do not wish to see here..., on the other hand Atobe is someone I like to talk to because I benefit so much from reading his/ her posts - whether I agree with all of them is a different thing.
Recently (say one week), strangely, people who write it seem to be more mature and sensible. Last week, I almost gave up coming back ...
May be, I am just not suited to the online community, it is a whole lot different culture all together...
to lionoasis,
not all countries are alike ...............luckily we are living on planet earth and not some advanced civilisation thats able to clone everything alike.savings interests rates, housing prices, salaries and food prices are vastly different from country to country....and so are their politicAL systems and scheme of things.i would rather go find a place where everyone can retreat n recuperate n reconsolidate resources in a battle than to perish altogether in a battle.there is a difference between winning( staying alive),losing(not staying alive) and trying to have a chance to win (and also staying alive).
fightting with problems on familiar grounds depends on the complexity of the person involved ........like some people are able to fight in arctic conditions and in tropical jungles.its the training involved and past experience.its all in the training n experience of the individual to fight with present problems and on how to handle them.
to lionoasis,
dont worry about angel7030,ger grandmother caught her spending too much ttime in sgforum and thought she went insane after spending too much time on it ...as well as laughing outloud.
probably her granny pulled her ears long long for that n banned her ever from goin into sgforum and strange websites that make her laugh by herself all day.

Hi,
That's good to know... I have nothing against her as a person, but if I were to put it diplomatically, her frequency is too far from mine...
Thanks for telling me...hope you enjoy this thread...

To him, all who leave Singapore are traitors to the country. Even though he does not say it outright, his postings show otherwise.
Perhaps he is one who have tried to leave before, but having failed to do so, has become very grouchy about it.
But then again, I was not forced to leave Singapore. I have a high level position in Singapore, just that I wanted to try out new challenges, and relocation and working overseas are tougher challenges to me, which I had wanted to try out.
In Singapore, I was too comfortable, I needed to do something out of my comfort zone in order to mature even more. At the same time, I was voting with my feet against the PAP, to break free from the suppressed wages in Singapore that they have imposed, to be free.
Many things are cheaper over here, and wages much higher over here than in Singapore
soul-rage & HITMAN11111111,
Dun know what xtreiyer is trying to achieve here, but if this person is sincere in what is said out of his/ her mouth, in Chinese, there is term call "blind loyalty" refering to an individual that is biased and/ or lacks the ability to judge between right or wrong, and agree for the sake of agreeing.

Agree
There is a term called self-delusion as well, where an individual deludes himself that he is better than everyone else, or thinks that his way is 100% correct, and all others 100% wrong.
One tell-tale sign of a person in delusion is that only he himself thinks he is right, and everyone else condemns him, AND he DOES NOT realize it
That's xtreiyer alright :)
