reminds me of this conversation i once had with a caucasian. in a bid to show he doesn't discriminate black people, he bought beer for his black neighbours when he was getting some for himself. i asked him why didn't he buy his white neighbour any beer and why the emphasis on his neighbour's color, he didn't know what to say.
if we display extra tolerance, acceptance and even provide preferential treatment for people of other race, does that mean we are gracious or we are closet racists?

You accept them as they are, but not ignoring them, thinking they are like you. There are Chinese who speak only their own dialects, and not a word of english, can you embrace them as one of your own?
There are also Indians who came from the small villages in India, can you accept their different body odour?
When sharing table with muslim in a crowded hawker center, do you think you should be sensitive enough not to order bak kut teh or you think they should respect your choice of food?
There is more to racial harmony that can be ignored.
And please DO NOT ACCEPT this as a politically issue!
There are Chinese, Malays, Indians, .....among those who are for and against the government. We need all races to accept one another to maintain racial harmony, regardless who is in power. and the most despicable politicians are the ones who would use racial conflict for their own agenda.
But I think you are smarter that.
This thread is becoming interesting. Sgdiehard, you are confusing ethnicity with culture and religion. "The Malays are proud of being Malays, with their own culture, especially religion." As for religion and culture, which is independant of race, I agree that we should 'embrace and accept' as these vary from different groups. (GROUPS, not races) I know of one mediacorp actress (elderly one), who acts in the Tamil channel, who is Chinese by race. She was born in a Chinese family, but was adopted by an Indian family subsequently. She grew up as a Hindu, and followed Tamil culture.
What I mean is, by race, I mean what is biological, in your genes. We should ignore that. Culture, religion, and language should not be confused with race. I remember how my teachers would always talk about Indians celebrating Deepavali, and Malays celebrating Hari Raya. Obviously, they mean Hindus and Muslims, instead of Indians and Malays.
This reminds me of something different (probably irrelevant). During my sec 3 camp at the begining of this year, we were on a sort of scavenger hunt, and we passed a mosque. That was when my class in-charge, who was the person conducting these activites wanted to ask me about my religion. He asked me whether I am a Hindu or a Tamil. He did not know the difference between language and religion. However, I understood what he meant and I told him that I am not religious.

What is ethnicity to you? what is race?
What is different biologically between a Chinese man, an Indian man, a caucasian and a Malay?

Anyway, all blood run red in color, in our small n fragile multi racial society, racial harmony is the last thing that we should embrace, funny how, we are an envision of most country, eg, when i am in Taiwan, where the population is homogenous, they do not understand why and how can people of different races live together, an indian to them is like a black skinned man, good for low job only.
"Cannot really ignore. How about accept and embrace?"
Believe the ruling party is using the education system to create racial harmony. IF this is the reason, I see nothing wrong about it.

For your info angel7030, i had the pleasure of touring Taiwan in June with 3 of my Chinese friends, i was the only Indian guy in the group. I admit that at times people did mistake me for a "hei ren", however i can't blame them. Taiwan is a homogeneous country and they have probably never seen an Indian dude in their country, but i knew they didn't mean it in a racist manner. All in all i was taken aback by their friendliness and hospitality.. There were times when my group got attention because of me, but in fact i liked the attention, i knew it was just out of curiosity and in return i showed my gratitude. I was in their country, i respected them and i spoke as much Mandarin as i knew to every person i met and a few of them were pleasantly surprised. Overall i liked the trip and i would definitely go back in future.. Basically if u treat another person regardless of his race like a human being, then u get respect in return, its a two way thing.. Obviously angel7030 u have displeasure over EVERYTHING, and u call yourself Taiwanese? What crap, i don't think u are, yur just another typical Singaporean SPG!
She is not a typical Singaporean SPG, I have come across many SPG whose attitude is much better than angel7030. angel7030 is a typical old ah lian granny harlot, whore of joo chiat. Her behaviour is typical ah lian's behaviour.
TS.Its bullcrap!!
When i was in sec 4 last time, my teacher asked the class to fill up this CME thing also.
Its objective is mainly filled with propaganda.
The "test" was seriously pissing the shit outta me. And it came down to the question which questioned your loyalty to the country.
At this point, i was fucking mad. so i wrote down as the ans:
"Fucked with propaganda shit"
-later .. teacher gave me back my paper and asked for 1-to-1 discussion with me. HA! Didnt give a shit. Other teacher like Form teacher, SS teacher, english teacher also went to talk to me. Heh.

You have a rebellious mind, you refuse to obey the state propaganda and the education system designed to brainwash you. You can easily see through the propaganda.
This is good.
I assume that the state media propaganda has no influence whatsoever in controlling your mindset and behaviour?
You are not one of those who will support PAP and senile lee.

She is a disgrace to Singapore and Taiwan. Keeps claiming she is half taiwanese yet don't know about the politicians, claimed and argued that Mr Ma the President has son when in reality he does not. What a shame!

Well, ethnicity is just the superficial differences, skin colour and skull shape.

You should probably write "Pay me millions or better billions of money and the country will have my loyalty unquestioned." :)

so if the elderly mediacorp actress (elderly one), who grew up in an Indian family, as a Hindu, and followed Tamil culture, but does not know where she came from, how do you know she is ethnically Chinese, will her DNA tell if she was born a Chinese, a Vietnamese, or may be Korean or Japanese?
An ethnic group is a group of humans who identify with each other through a common heritage, and this identity is further marked by the recognition from others of a group's distintiveness, such as common culture language, religion and behavior.
Does the actress identify herself as Chinese? will the Chinese identify her as Chinese? I don't think so, even if she has a fairer skin colour than the indian, or a skull shape similar to the Chinese (how can you tell?)
Ultimately, when we talk about accepting and embrace others for racial harmony, we are talking about accepting and embracing heritage, language, religion and behaviors that are different from ours, whether you call it ethnicity, race, or nationality.

Well, how do I know she is a chinese? My mom has met her in person, as she too used to work in mediacorp, and the actress said that her parents told her once that she was adopted. And yes, her DNA will tell that she is Chinese.
Ethnicity is not what you are talking about. Ethnicity is 100% biological.

Well, we have different definition on ethnicity, to each his own.
just make sure that you know how your teacher defines ethnicity, or you will not be getting your marks for your work.
What to do, very thrilling ma.
That's why so many people like to watch F1 Grand Prix. XD
Ask them why they keep talking about it lo...

He simply means, the "Yellow Ribbon" thingy is a joke, and things "behind the scenes" really aren't as they're publicised to the public. Go figure. =\
Even if you don't mention race, when I look at the name I already can tell.
There is even a difference between Hong Kong names and local born Cantonese names.
To notify people of your race is so that, for example in an army camp, the soldiers can be differentiated into Muslim and non-Muslim for cookhouse purpose. Some names are not obvious as to whether Muslim or not.
I also know what Burmese, Vietnamese and Thai names sound like.
When I was helping out with name lists, both in my office and voluntary work, one look at their names and I can tell race or nationality for some.
I will blacklist any Vietnamese, Thai or Burmese names in my voluntary work so as to make sure they don't become the new committee members in future.
