AP - Thursday, September 3
SINGAPORE - Singapore's elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew said Wednesday that he expects his People's Action Party to win the next two elections to extend its grip on power by as much as 10 more years.
"I don't see any problem in the next election or probably in the next one after that," Lee, 85, said at a dinner to mark the fifth anniversary of a college named after him.
"But if we don't find a good team in the election after that, and the opposition gets a good team together, we are at risk."
Lee, who founded the PAP and was Singapore's first prime minister from 1959 to 1990, remains a powerful figure in the Cabinet and in the party. The PAP is the only party to have ruled Singapore.
The current government was elected in 2006. The next elections are set for 2011.
Lee, who now has the title of mentor minister, said even if the opposition took power by a "freak result," it won't be allowed to fire top police, army and other officials without the approval of the president, who is appointed by a committee of government officials.
Lee, who is the father of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said an opposition government would by law also need the president's approval to tap international reserves, indicating it would not be given.
Otherwise "all our hard-earned savings could go in five years," he said. "I spent 15 years thinking up these safeguards."
I also have confidence PAP will win. I suppose lky will survive another 10 years or so to see his party wins for two more elections.
hahahahha!

The problem is there aren't sufficient people to vote for oppositions so i can say confidently that they will win.
Probably oppositions will have to wait for a few generations later to take over.
Sad!

You never know.
I think maybe even he knows that the new citizens that they bring in now will vote against them next time.

I truly hope they take over the next election but I know it is impossible.
Sigh!

We can make it happen. ITE-make thing happen.
Give him Freak result. Let LKY see he success in 60s and fail in 10s
I think the MM is right, I mean all factors on the ground indicate that the PAP will win the next two elections. But the real question is not so much as to do with winning. Everyone loves to win, and in the process ensure untold benefits to themselves and their minions. Rather, what will become of the PAP 10 years from today? or what will become of our Singapore with respect to this ever changing world?
I feel that there is much more to the MM's statement than just an open declaration of the PAP's longevity. The necessity of making such a statement stems from something far deeper within the great man's mind. I believe that symptom is uncertainity. The uncertainity of the state of the PAP in a post LKY Singapore, and as such the uncertainity of our Singapore in the face of an uncertain world.
Does it really matter if the PAP wins the next two elections, as we the electorate return it to power? I mean 10 year is a heartbeat when seen through the travials of time. But through time, traditions are estalished, legacies are founded and only a legacy ensures the eternal survival of one's name and existence through time. Singapore is our MM's legacy.
But the problem with models and equations is that they always seem to take on a life of their own, especially in the light of rapidly changing internal and external factors, which will come to determine the accuracy and vitality of the resultant modules. So, what will become of the PAP model after 10 years of extended rule? Will it attain the promise cherished by it's craftors or will it take on a whole different dimension and outlook, and in the process write a new chapter in the legacies of it's very founders.

We must. I want to see that senile freak eat his words. Torture people for so long already. Time for payback.
torture??? where got, most Singaporeans are actually torturing themselves, sometime they dun realize that they are living in heaven.

Blame the ageing population.
Other than that, I guess you are right.

its amazing how whores can imagine themself to be living in heaven
you don't need opposition to take over the parliment to change Govt. You just need 30% to 40% seated by opposition to rise issues and debate. Put PAP in a defensive mood.
The Chemistry in the Parliment will changed and those who are serious minister will stay on while those who are in for the millions will quit. This might lead to wider change in parlimentary politics.

In what ways FT will support oppositions?

please, use your brain before making such overrated, overstated statement.
If people are living in heaven why are you complaining your pub has no business? Must you always oppose to gain attention to yourself?
