Not long ago, LTA has implemented that all taxis passengers regardless of their health conditions must alight at the designated taxis stands in the CBD areas and this causes a furore before LTA eventually allows taxis passengers to alight at the side road. It is a case of no proper planning and feasibility studies done before a policy is implemented.
Now, SMRT has implemented the no drinking and eating rule inside the trains. SMRT has fined a passenger who has taken a sweet to supplement her low sugar level as doctors have advised these patients to take a sweet otherwise these patient will faint. The irony is that the passenger is not fine because the passenger is throwing the wrapper on the floor but the passenger is fined because the passenger has a sweet in the mouth.
It is going to be another case of no proper planning and feasibility studies done before a policy is implemented.

"spare the rod, spoil the child"...
I think SMRT is trying to be a bad guy...so that singaporeans can learn.
But SMRT has overdone it.

TS, you brought up a good point.
It is the same with regard to cigarettes and smoking.

Cigarettes and smoking could cause lung cancer and respiratory diseases but what harm is caused and must be fined when one has a sweet in one's mouth ?
SMRT has overdone it.

In regards to the no eating or drinking in trains and buses, I think some boundaries have to be set.
I was drinking water from my water bottle in a train(NEL) home, and I was rudely interrupted by the train attendant in the train to ask me to stop drinking. What the fuck? It’s just plain water, not some coke, pepsi, etc… I find it very absurd. What if my journey starts from Pasir Ris and ends at Woodlands? I have to tahan the thirst until I reach the station, exit the station and then start sipping water from my water bottle? Fucking ridiculous!
Regarding the passenger with low sugar level, what if she really faints in the train? Is SMRT gonna take the responsibility? Is SMRT gonna pay the medical/hospital bills for the passenger? I don’t think so… They will be like: “You are just suay that you cannot tahan throughout the entire journey, so it’s none of our business.”
SMRT, please use some brains(If you guys have any) to plan out how the policy is gonna be both be beneficial and safe for the Singapore community.
Obviously, SMRT has not done proper planning and feasibility studies before the rule is implemented.
If they can impose a fine because you are chewing a sweet, they can also fine you for chewing bits of food leftover from a meal. Say you just had a meal, you have food particles left in your mouth, you start chewing on it, it is also eating.

that is chewing, not eating, they will advise you to see a dentist..many old peoples teeth are in bad condition, can store food one
All thanks to those k p o from STOMP complain this complain that. wonder now perfect those people. I think stompers have nothing to do take this pictures that pictures.
stomp the stompers.
Anyway, the rules is simple, no drinking, no eating, no chewing, no cooking..take it or leave it.
Then how about babies drinking milk....breast feeding can hor
Breast feed also cannot..
later the baby kena fine..
The teenagers that are caught on stomp web site are the starter of all the fine.
SInce their photos constituted the evidence, these pest should be fined and punished for broking the law.
The company should go forward and punish the guilty party instead of bullying people.
I believe if the woman has medical records..she should not be fine...

U shall be smart when do that kind of things. See see and look look first, check out for SMRT personnel before this kind of things.
U all know Singaporean pattern la. If one can excuse, all other will come up with plenty of reasons telling themselves they shall not be fine and excuse.
Actually I am grateful, SMRT is taking action on MRT. Too many bad behaviour and passsengers are not behaving. U all shall be grateful they make yr ride peasant when less ungracious passengers eat and dirty the MRT.

case by case basics, if you got a medical problem, MRT is not a place to be...so crowded..JAM PACKED...like sardine can...lucky me drive, if not long long kenna molest alots liao
Though I do not agree of people blatantly eating their food in MRT but I think it should be acceptable for people taking occasional sips of water to relieve their thirst or popping a sweet for whatever reasons.
Does SMRT have the right to fine people for eating / drinking in MRT as I recall SMRT is a private company?
Good point. what if the parents need to feed their baby in the train premises???
Originally posted by starExcaliblur:The no eating / drinking rules have been there for quite a number of years. Even those who take occasional sips of water to relieve their thirst or pop a sweet for whatever reasons are also fined.

It GLC linked, what you expect, sitting on the board are Ministers, not laymen hor. Private is only a matter of churning more income, just let me ask you one question, does SMRT got any competitors here?? No right! it a monopoly game for them. Even if they want to increase the fare tomorrow, what are you going to do..take the other private company train ar??/ where got? So dun be stupid hor, be smart can liao.
SMRT stated that it is the responsibility of passengers to take whatever they need before boarding the Train, most commuters will travel only about 1 hrs the most, no big deal, drink before you board, then drink again after disembark. SMRT is not looking into individual, it is looking into a mass, the rules come into enforcement was due to the hygiene problem, so if one can drink, all can drink, and later someone will drink water melon and the next follow...dun you guys like a clean MRT??

It is right for SMRT to impose the no eating and drinking rule.
But SMRT has overdone it to fine a passenger who has taken a sweet to supplement her low sugar level as doctors have advised these patients to take a sweet otherwise these patient will faint. The irony is that the passenger is not fine because the passenger is throwing the wrapper on the floor but the passenger is fined because the passenger has a sweet in the mouth.
In the rules of law, there must be evidence of crime before one can be punished by fine or imprisonment.
SMRT's logic to impose the fine is to prevent littering and to keep the trains clean and safe.
So, what is the logic to impose the fine when a passenger who has taken a sweet to supplement her low sugar level as doctors have advised these patients to take a sweet otherwise these patient will faint.
Does her action lead to littering and makes the trains unsafe ?
Obviously, the answer is no.
So, do you think that SMRT has overdone it ?

In management, i studied that whatever you want to do, make sure you do it without any prejudice, otherwise, whatever your decision and thing implememted will not have any credit and people will just ignore it.
As i said earlier, knowing that no eating of foods and drinking is allow should be across the baord, one must therefore, arrange him or herself to pre anticipate the journey time and take whatever he/she needs before boarding.
If one can give accuses and get accused, the other will follow, those high sugar will take pills, those giddy will take pills, those with stomach ucler will drink milk, those with this and that will come into the picture. Then what credibility does this rule holds???
If I implement a strict discipline rules to my staffs and workers, i make sure that they adhere to it so as to make it serve it purpose, and the purpose for these case is for a hygiene with no insects, ants, smell, and rubbish for our clean train whereby all can enjoy.
I do pity peoples with illness, but for them, they have to be self beholden to their illness. If someone take sweet and the others see that it is ok without understanding it, then it will be an issue. Therefore i urge all commuters to do whatever needed in term of medication and foods before boarding, I believe it can be done, if not these rule will come into picture.

I understand that you are a beautiful, healthy and young lady and you have probably not experienced any serious illness except flu and fever. Doctors always advise patients to take the medication as soon as possible when patients begin to feel the symptoms. Symptoms and illnesses cannot be timed and planned.
The logic of only healthy individuals can make use of public transport system is flawed.
Indeed, SMRT has already made many efforts to help the infirm, handicap, wheelchaired and elderly individuals in making it safe and user friendly to them by building ramps and lifts.
SMRT's management philosophy is definitely socially responsible but in this particularly case, an SMRT employee has probably being over zealous in performing his or her duty and overdone it.
PS : Angel, since you like to assume the identity of being the SMRT spokeswoman, may I pose you the question that how will a sweet in one's mouth dirty the train or make it unsafe ? It is obvious. The answer is it will not dirty or make the train unsafe. The train will be dirtied only when the passenger throws the wrapper on the floor.
If she does not dirty the train or make it unsafe, how can this passenger be fined ?
