KUALA LUMPUR, July 21, 2009 (AFP) - - A religious court in Malaysia has sentenced a tearful Singaporean Muslim model to six strokes of the cane after she drank beer in a nightclub, reports said Tuesday.
Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol at a hotel nightclub in the eastern state of Pahang last year, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.
"We feel the sentence is fair after going through the prosecution's argument and since the rotan (cane) is provided for in the law," Pahang Sharia High Court judge Abdul Rahman Yunus said, according to the paper.
"The rotan is aimed at making the accused repent and serves as a lesson to Muslims," he added, also fining Kartika 5,000 ringgit (1,412 dollars).
The model, who cried when the judgement was delivered, said she would appeal.
State religious officials could not be reached for comment on the case.
Malaysia, which has large Indian and Chinese minorities freely enjoying alcohol, has a two-track legal system. Civil courts operate alongside state-based sharia courts, which can try Muslims for religious offences.

They could do what Australia did when Nguyen was sentenced to be hanged. Put the pressure on at every opportunity. Though not successful in that case, it still showed that Australia supports their citizens, even if they do stupid things.

The following is an extract from a news report in the Singapore Straits Times, dated 14 January 2009 :-
The Malaysian Muslim was caught drinking alcohol with her Singaporean husband in a Kuantan hotel lounge by syariah officers. He was let off.
Why was the Singaporean husband let off ?
Is he not a Muslim ?
Most non-Muslim males who married a Muslim female, must convert to Islam.
This will be the first time in Malaysia that a woman will be given a lashing, and one can only wonder if the sentence was made harsher due to the fact that she was married to a non-Muslim Singaporean - who should have converted to Islam when marrying her.

the syria laws protect the muslim women very well, better than the women charter and Aware, men who desert or do adultery, hve to paid the consquences with a lifetime alimony, but if the women commit a sin, she will be punish severely. It two side of a coins, so dun alway said that we women are on the upper hand of laws ya.
By the way, Syria laws is the most toughest laws in the world.

You surely must be either stupendously ignorant or simplistically stupid to believe that the Shariah Law protect the Muslim Women, when it allows the husband to divorce the Muslim women by simply repeating 7 times "I divorce you".
If at all the Shariah Law discriminates Women in all spheres of social, economic, cultural and political life.

What so special about that law which allow you to re-marry 7 times only if her "past husband dun want her" - when any law will allow a woman to marry as many times as she wants when she gets a legal divorce papers ?
That Law allow a Man to marry 4 wives at one time, and is given total liberty to divorce the woman by simply stating verbally 7 times - "I divorce you" in public - how do you see this law as protect the Muslim Woman ?
With you working all night at the Bar, and sleeping 30 percent of the day, are you so free to see "police catch those malay men in coffee shop for not paying their wifey monthly money" ?

The Muslims are enjoying life better in Singapore - as there are no Moral Inspection Teams that peep into homes, parked cars and bushes, or raid the hotel rooms to check Identity Cards in the middle of the nights, or raid night entertainment premises without any warrants to check on the patrons.
In Singapore, is the Syriah Law given equal status with Civil Laws ?

In this way, the governor become will gain popularity and be focus in the news.Even arab gals also drink in Dubai, and indonesia gals in batam..what is malaysia??
