This year marks the 45th Anniversary of the Racial Riots in Singapore. Thus, we will always choose 21st July to be a remembrance for this event. It is a special occassion for all of us, Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians and other Muslim minorities, all of which are born in Singapore to unite and remain harmonious.
However, since the setup of the National Integration Council to assimilate new citizens and residents, what do you think of Racial Harmony to recognise them? How about Racial Harmony for the Filipinos, Burmese, Vietnamese and Thai immigrants as well?
HOW CRUDE!
Racial harmony day for the FBVTs ? After their racial riots first.
I bet the Thais and Burmese can beat the crap outa the Pinoys and Vietmese anytime.

Read about the "headscarf martyr", she was called "terrorist" and "slut" when she asked her neighbour to make way for her son to go on the swings in a playground in Germany, and she was later killed by him in court.
Her husband while trying to help her was shot in court by the guards, because they thought that as long as he wasn't blond, he must be the attacker!
Is such hatred and division sew by the government? blood is the same, but body is different, in skin color, in the clothing that go on it, the language that come out of it and the thinking behind the skull.
reading the threads on FT and FW, I wont' be surprised somebody some young true blue singaporeans would attack some arabs, prc chinese, indian, pinoy or vietnamese for nothing.
The chinese says, a drop in temperature overnight will not form a 3 feet thick of ice.
don't know what we can do for iran, china, north korea, germany, ...or anywhere else, but surely there must be something many of us can do by giving a balanced view to avoid "sowing hatred and division among the different races, different religion, FT/local, immigrant/ true blue....IN SINGAPORE."
do not mistaken individual prejudice to govt policy that try to limit or arrest groups by association of ethnicity, ideas, religions. There are no place for govt to shoot their own daugthers/sons.
A side notes
A PRC ethnics rivary against muslim minority in the northeast region could easily be spill over to SG. As our muslim neighbors too watch TV in their livingroom to see their muslim brothers are being bully by the Chinese. We are the nearest cities. That is why Singapore need to stay clear as being seen as a chinese state.
back to my point.
In recent years we have witness institution by justification of self govt are taking harsh action against their own citizens, all just to keep themselved in power. Perharps the people of the free world should come together demonstrate our solidarity with the people who are struggling for their voice and their right to pursue their way of life.

No mentions of the Palestinians and the Afghan people getting bombed?
Just because it's not mentioned in the news doesn't mean it's not just as serious.

but i am focusing on govt who choose to take deadly action against their own citizens.....! and it is their own citizens that are either running away from their own govt, or throwing stone at their own police or being arrest and Jail by their own govt.
i think there is a need to address how govt should treats its own people.
I am not talking about govt to govt international relations.

Are you sure Singaporeans will be physically violent?
I think the very most verbal violence.
I find it weird if people of Vietnamese, Burmese, Thai or Filipino descent were to participate in our local grassroots organisations. They can help as foreigners but not as locals. Furthermore, I don't think there is regulation that blogs should not speak ill of these races.

I'm not sure about you, but i tend to read both side of the story and talk to the people from the country before i start judging the government.
You would think with the recent scandals on the Tibetan riots people would be more guarded on the sort of news reports they receive, and how prejudiced the Western media are on affairs that happen in China.
I've wondered how long it was before someone decided to take the Xinjiang riots and started making it sound like it's the authoritian government in Beijing at work again.
Did you bother to read what happened in Xinjiang and who were the ones causing the real damages before you start hopping about Chinese government oppression? Or even how it started?
Somehow it's ok for them Uighuar to attack and murder people, but it was wrong for the Chinese government to arrest them?
The definite impression i'm getting from you is that it's less evil for my country to invade another country and more evil when i oppress my own citizens.
So this the day to remember. So to those out there who wanna post racial disharmony thread, think again.

Yeah of course not racial disharmony among our races and religions defined in Singapore's dictionary.
Does it say nationality?

Cultural difference, including ethnicity and religious differences, is also very different from political difference and government rules.
Change the government in NK the people will have freedom, but a new government in myanmar may not guarantee no discrimination against the karen minority. Japan can change their government n times, but an alien will remain an alien.
The american guards fired at the american students at the kent state university, the south korea military fired at the citizen of guangju, the thai army fired at students demonstrators in Bangkok... Would a different indian government acted differently from Indira who ordered the Indian army to fire on the sikhs defending the golden temple? I do not agree with the governments of any of the countries mentioned, but do not be too hasty to conclude that only certain countries would "shoot their own daughters and sons."
The riots in Singapore and Malaysia were started by the different races, were that something done by the government?
the incident in urumuqi was a spillover from an incident from quangzhou over jobs vacancy, nothing to do with some people being minority or muslims.
Singapore was never, is not and will ever be viewed as a chinese state, by Chinese Singaporean, nor the PRC Chinese, except those who don't know the difference.
and this kind of ignorance is usually the reason why differences are exaggerated, distorted and twisted causing disharmony and clashes, and the blame is put on the government.
Exaggerated distorting news and foreign influence are the same reason that most of these govts will want to tell the world. But Again isn't this type of protest repeating over and over again?
Ultimately you have to ask what are the under current that lies beneath the protest? Are the deadly force justified against civilian population? Ultimately the decision to use deadly forces lies in the hands of their own authority.
Freedoms are intangible relatives, we subscribe to a system of electing our officials but we don't subject to deadly forces by the govt that we elected. And the govt that we elect are subjected to answering to its Law and people.
I am saying we are witnessing that govt willing to use of force to justify their control over its people in the name of state interest. It has been increasingly a common trend
Regardless of what countries perhaps it is time to rethink the conduct of states in relation to its people.

if your neighbor tossed a stone to your house and broke a window glass. You call in the police, when the police came they enter your house and beat you up instead.
Which do you need to fix? your neighbor or police first? so it is not about lesser evil but of how do you interact between the people and the state. I am saying we are witnessing the increasing frequency that state are more willing to use deadly force to assert control.
On the note on PRC.
Today is Xinjiang tomorrow is Tibet whats the diff? today mob from Xinjiang tomorrow mob from Tibet in future it will be some western influence etc.
This topics is about intergration. At current rate the PRC govt will have to terminates the entire ethnic to intergrate the entire region, do you know how big is the area that stretch from Tibet and Xinjiang? So don't you think it is necessary to start having 2nd look at ultimately are the govt social program working?
History will catch up......

Facts, inferences, lies, exaggeration, prejudice....are all bundled in one package called news, and is given through all kinds of media. It blinds and suffocate you if you are unable to differentiate the differences.
there were underlying current before mumbai were attacked, before 911, before the wallstreets fat cats ran away with billions of $... what kind of actions could have been taken to protect innocent civilians from such deadly forces, physical or financial. Who make the call on what are the necessary actions, include the level of forces involved. that is the task of the government official whom we elected, to tackle those who take up arms, who abuse freedom for their own agenda and pocket, and these people are also citizens!
so what are you witnessing? "govt willing to use of force to justify their control over its people in the name of state interest?" If you are referring to the unrest in Xinjiang, then you are either totally misinformed or you had chosen to ignore the fact, just because this happens in China.
Should the Chinese government allows the two ethnic races to attack each other? should they act otherwise? are actions taken by government to control them, from rioting, yes!
Did the two ethnic races fight because of religion, cultural difference, or unhappy over distribution of wealth and job opportunities?
there are all kinds of people, the law abiding ones, those who take law in their own hands, those who are blind and prejudice, for and against the government, .... together we are ONE PEOPLE from whom the government should protect? NO!

if you and your neighbor start exchanging flying stones, both of you have become public nuiance and you are also endangering other neighbors. don't the police have the right to come into your house to take away all the stones? You need to fix yourself first, and exercise self control or others will control you.
So what is the difference between xinjiang and tibet, one is muslim minority and the others buddists, one is populated by uyghurs and hans, the others by tibetan and hans. You can also find other minorities in both region, and in other region like gansu, ninxia...
What is similar, the ones who took to the streets are called mob, there were tibetan mob, hans mob and uyghurs mob. when they killed, blood is red.
What happened in xinjiang today is a result of two uyghurs minority killed in a dispute in a factory in guangzhou over job opportunities. I don't know what social intergration problem there is, but the uyghurs are free to practice their muslim faith, the tibetan their brand of buddism, and there are 30 millions muslim in China, why do you see there is a need to "terminates the entire ethnic to intergrate the entire region"? this is very strong, evil, uncalled for accusation.

huh WHAT integration? China never integrates. The great Han tribe only assimilates.
""We are (the Han Tribe). (Your culture) will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." ~ Adapted from the Borg in Star Trek.
Read Chinese history....assimilation assimilation assimilation.
Actually I am not too confident on sg trying to integrate the PRC new citizens into sg society.
They have no need to, given the large base of their fellow countrymen all living in singapore.
Most of the time, they stick to their own people - you see groups of 2,3 or 5 usually together in town, nieghbourhoods, malls, cinemas etc.
Very rarely do you see them mixing with the locals.

haha...long time no hear.
WHAT is integration and what is assimilation?
Have the uyghurs or the tibetans assimilated or integrated into the Chinese society?
Is this current problem in xinjiang a problem with the force to assimilate?

Singapore is so small. Every new immigrant coming into Singapore is like a depleting coal or oil field depleting day by day.
I think Singapore's size is even smaller than the whole oil field.
I can't stand any immigrants, especially from Vietnam, Burma, Phillippines and Thailand, coming here and acting as if they are one of us!
I can still stand PRC and India countrymen acting like one of us. Or Malaysians and Indonesians as well.
