And Of course, people would rather shop at giant than shop at Ntuc which belongs to the government in one way or another.
Is Giant a GLC subsidary? hehe
Macha, great news! Saw an old man driving a Ferrari today. Recession's over!

And into Nassim Road.
we have come a long way, from a poor sea village to a thriving port and now a country... before you say i'm digging the past, remember that the past is your present and your present is your future. we must not forget our old guards, those that shaped Singapore, those that sacrificed their years on improving Singapore as a whole.
was MM Lee a good man? no one could be certain but we know he is a hard-liner, willing to crash oppositions and destroy those who stood in his way... is he hated? i believe so... but admired at the same time. History has proven that men that leaves their name in history has to be ruthless. Of course there are a few that was kind and honourable yet their ending never sounded nice... if i could make a film based on MM Lee, the name will be, "The Last Man Standing". he has survived when many of his foes and friends have left. if that is not admirable enough
did PAP made mistakes? obviously... birth control in the early 80's was already a mistake confirmed today... if you were born in the 80's, your parents might have told you that Singapore government wanted to stop families having more than 2 kids but today, the more the merrier... it doesn't stop there but still we are here... in the turn of the decade of 2000, reaching 2010... as a pretty prosperous country in South East Asia... we have strict rules and we have laws that foreigners do not understand... yet, we are still here, surviving the "economic downturn" pretty well. of course we have the lower income earners, who struggle everyday but we can be sure in Singaporean's own words... "we won't starve to death but we won't get rich either"...
i know we have many greviances and there are certainly rooms for improvement for the present government. i only ask that they do listen to the people and act accordingly to their conscious.
did the government made mistakes? obviously,

Thats you thinking.
I rather wait till I see hordes of HDB heartlanders driving Kias, Cherrys, Suzukis, Hondas, then I declare recession over.

Macha, I see you missed the point.
The number of shoppers you observe outside Giant is not proof of a healthy economy. Neither is spotting a Ferrari. They're isolated anecdotes from which no conclusion should be drawn.

u must be joking, 3 rooms are driving Benz and BM already, what is 4 or 5 rooms or even condos compare to them, spend so much on housing and pay the HDB and banks interest so much for what?? Be smart, in Singapore, u go home sleep only, all look like jail rooms block by block. Get a private property lah.
LHL announced upgrading of Changi prison with a 2 millions budget. Wha lau, Prison better than HDB lor
Ha ha ha h ah ha! Interesting to read some hypocritical response here!
PAP (LKY contributed in the past), now he is taking more than he deserves.
Sigh! Like I said before, with kiasu, kiasi, hypocritical people in Singapore, PAP will always win. Hip hip hooray! Let's do away with election and turn PAP into monarchy. Ha ha ha ha.
I personally think that people spending during recession has nothing much to do with the recession.
Take for example, those buying necessities from Giant, Carrefour etc. They are buying for their daily needs. And the ferrari. Drive ferrari so? The car might be a few year old, bought before the recession starts?
Does it mean that during recession, we cannot do shopping, cannot drive a car or rather cannot eat as well?
If the phrase "in Singapore, you won't die of hunger neither would you be very rich"... can i apply to the recession, you won't die of hunger, neither if the economy improve, your boss won't increase your salary to make you slightly richer?
Bulk grocery business is recession proof.
During this downturn.. Walmart is hiring more people to cope with increased demand.
The ones that are taking a bigger hit are the high end grocery/retailers.
same mah, here lagi good, NTUC fairprice (but not so fair) can even upturn the downturn...imagine the power, even ah pek can upturn also....they are also employing workers, but mostly ah peks and ah ma. Seibei slow..me Q up also can take a nap.
I am thinking of setting the mee siam mai hum as my ringtone LOL.

Right one old man vs a whole bunch of people is just a digression from the point.
The point actually is, the masses in Singapore still have buying power while in the mother of all recessions, that means the government must be doing something right.
What exactly, as Ah Chai has asked, I don't know, as I can't pin it down. It is a whole gamult of governance working together that brought this about and not just one facet of it.
And its kudos to the government, and that is the point (in relation to the topic).

If the number of shoppers reflects the condition of an economy.
Then I must agree that USA is doing hellova good job.
I just got back from Disneyland.. and boy that place is crowded like Shenton Way's rush hours.
Mommy's with their SUV strollers are taking over some of the busiest shopping malls in town.
Recession ? what recession ?
So, is the government doing a good job, or were we conned into believing that this is the mother of all recessions?

Well.. if they don't con you into believing it's the mother of all recession.. how will you believe they are doing a good job ?

Recession ? what recession ?
There is a recession, but people have get use to it and said "What the hell, just go out and have a good time, let tomorrow worry by themselves" So, i guess people are more practical with this recession.
There is still some saving from the public the govt is trying to dig it out by encourage one to spend and censor most bad news and also to churn the economy, even a domestic one, so to speak.

so be it, they still got lawn mover to repair, enginneers are creative and imaginative lots, you dun have to worry about them, they can suit any jobs.
Shops are going on Sales, peoples see an opportunity to buy cheap, whether the economy will revive or not, that is another question.
Use to hear such sentence as.."Hey Angel, honey, u know what, that bunch of brocoli is only $1.50 compare to $4 formerly, so cheap, let cook it"

During a recession.. your neighbour is out of job. During a depression.. you are out of job.- economist joke.
Singaporeans did the right thing.. when they saved up for rainy days.

But if the rain prolong, then god bless us. I may have to stand outside and sell myself
