P labs give home owners toxic shock
4:00AM Saturday May 30, 2009
By Andrew Laxon
Home buyers and landlords have been warned to watch out for a growing number of properties contaminated by being used as P labs.
About 1300 labs have been found in the past 10 years, and decontamination specialists believe the total number could be 10 times higher.
Cooking methamphetamine produces toxic chemicals that can poison the air in a house for years.
Homes often have to be stripped of carpets, wallpaper and floor coverings to make them safe again.
Several Weekend Herald readers described the damage and the health and financial costs suffered from unwittingly buying a former meth lab.
One person affected bought a house in Auckland in February and moved in the next month.
"Over a period of two months I developed worsening sleeplessness to the extent that at the end I was getting only about three to four hours' sleep a night," said the man, who did not want to be named.

We have been living in a almost drug free Singapore. Therefore,
u have to beware the culture in overseas may be totally different.
For example, drugs is a way of life in Oz ,NZ.
Oz gavaman also set up Injection Room(air cond and not to be disturbed by police,of couse. But paid by tax payers) for drug addicts to inject!!
Dude, you are saying it like every house in NZ is toxic. Given the total number of houses over there, it is very unlikely that you will end up buying such a house. NZ herald is just their tabloid and they like to spice up their stories like our "New Paper". Given the potential growth of NZ, I would say NZ properties are still good investments in the long run.
Aussie bastads again

''A Hamilton landlord is facing bills of $12,000 after a P-lab exploded inside her rental property.
Sue Holdren visited the Walsh St property, her former family home, this week for the first time since the explosion in the house's kitchen on March 28.
The blast left it classified an emergency zone police and needing an expensive clean-up of drug-making chemicals.
Two months on and the house is still empty.
It was originally so contaminated it failed its first decontamination process, which involved removing all fabric furnishings including beds, curtains, light-shades, carpets and vinyl.
Ms Holdren and her partner Don William, both superannuitants living in Australia, could not re-tenant the home and their benefit was all going on expenses including mortgage, rates and insurance...................''

Going by the same logic, then if I buy a HDB and I got a bad deal, everyone should stop buying HDB too? Sure, some kiwis grow their own weed and brew their own p, but the numbers are just too little to mean that NZ properties are not worth buying. If you worry about buying such a house, you can always buy a land and build your own house. Yes, you can do that easily in NZ.
knock the lion head, everywhere in the world, buying second hand house is a risk mah, surely u got to check it out, some are build on cemetry, some because of murder case,,.etc etc...and in Singapore, if you got a cheap house or HDB flat or condo, u got to be careful, dun be too happy you get a discount, three days later, loan sharks will be knocking at your door at 3 am.
So, nothing special about the NZ or OZ houses, at least nobody will disturb them, unlike singapore here, spray paint, pig heads, locks, flower pot, scribble your names, address and O$P$ etc etc..

Dunt compare apple with orange.SG is too small to put all,
if not majority of population,in landed house. In oz,house is a norm.
In SG,flat is a norm.We cant change this situation.
Unless SG reduce her population!!
Singapore ---population 4.9 million,land 700 km2--ie 143 km2 per 1 million pop
Australia---pop. 21 million,land 7,680,000 km2,ie 365,000 km2 per 1 million pop.
Currently in SAG,u still buy terrace house below S$1 million!!
