NTUC Fairprice is not so fair after all despite its publicly declared role to create an environment to help this worker-population to cut cost of living.
By selling sub-standard products to unwitting and gullible Singaporeans that misplaced their trust in the NTUC Fairprice propaganda - Singaporeans are attracted by the supposedly low priced bargains that require them to use more of the consumer items to accomplish the same tasks.
Instead of giving the Singaporean consumer value for money - it is NTUC Fairprice policy to extract value from their money spent.
Looking at the NTUC 2006-2007 Financial Statements (see Pg 78) - one can see the 100 per cent leap in the 2007 Operating Profits compared to the results from 2006 .
How did they achieve this spectacular performance in a cut-throat environment of retailing highly competitive cheap consumer goods ?
This Corporate Policy has spread even to the insurance division at NTUC Income - which even led to its ex-CEO to comment that “NTUC is less pro-society now”
NTUC's role in serving the Singapore public has turned from a social support role to one of a profit oriented organization.
How else should we see the glass tower at No 1 Shenton Way that is an iconic representation of how the new NTUC is out-of-touch with the Singaporean masses toiling everyday and depending on the sincerity of the NTUC to serve Singaporeans ?
Instead of building the billion dollar NTUC glass tower, that same amount could have been used to provide Singaporeans with quality goods to improve our health, our Standard of Living at the same time to achieve Lower Cost of Living in Singapore.
What use has the NTUC Glass Tower at No 1 Shenton Way in serving Singaporeans' needs ?
It is another glass castle to serve the vanity of the PAP Minister's need to have one for himself, and equating themselves to any successful property tycoon in Singapore.

With the "top management" PAP having profit making as their top priority it is understandable why NTUC is no longer pro society. I
That day I was so pissed off to see a great jump in price - normal price for halal chicken thigh is $1.75, increase to $3.10, $3.20. This is obviously cut throat! Afterall, the NTUC housebrands are not that cheap. I have made comparison. They are generally cheaper by 5 cents to 20 cents. No big deal.
With the ruling party having control over NTUC, we can only expect them to continue the way they are or worse and worst in time to come.

Fairprice : The price of a fair. Not equate with under market price which is not fair.

Good comment, Hit the nail on head
Employers are happy, so they stay in Singapore till production or manpower costs rises then shift to China, or wherever cheaper. The Union leaders hold on to their positions, raking pay increase until there is no Employers left. Government happy they get their tax dollars and kickbacks until Employers leave for cheaper ground, might pull Union leaders to Government sector if Employers pull out. Whereas the workers dont get much pay, dont get much incentives, and when the Employer pulls out, they go jobless or switch to lower pay or go to another job with Union ties. Government rakes the cash from income tax.
Repeat cycle ad nauseum
Ministers must get high salaries to remain competitive.
Common Singaporeans must have low salaries to remain competitive.
I just had a look at this page http://www.mom.gov.sg/publish/momportal/en/press_room/press_releases/2009/20090429-factsh
Does anybody understand what on this is about? Talk about a bunch of acronyms.
