Was watching the chinese programme 线追踪 just now.
In it, it was reported that rental costs of a hawker stall of a certain hawker centre has been raised from $800-$900 per month, to $1700 per month. This is almost double. The reason for the raise is the most frustrating. There is no other reason, according to the authorities, but only because they did a market survey, and determined the market rate to be $1700.
My issue with the government is, why must everything be about market rate? Hawker food is one of the main methods to keep living costs affordable in Singapore. By doing this, they are causing a pressure to the hawkers to up their prices of food. This affects normal Singaporeans, like you and I. And the only reason for such an increase is market rate.
Why can't our government be more caring, and keep rental costs low, so long as their own costs are covered? I don't see why they need to raise to market rates, except for earning a profit out of it.
It's very saddening, that they are doing this now, when the economy is so bad...
Anyway, have written an enquiry to young PAPs, I know my views will probably be ignored, but, well, I just wanted to give it a try...
erm, soul rage, you forgot that the PAP runs the country like business. Without profit, they will not do it. I agree with you on keep prices affordable. Unfortunately, the greedy scumbags, pee ay pee has only money making at the expense of the nation on their mind. It is "you die your business, so long as we are still earning profit".
Just vote them out.
That's how they make money, knew about this long long time ago, my hawker friends told me about it.
Upgrading means rental increases.

How evil they are!!!! They are indeed very inward looking, very extremely money driven, not fit to be our leaders. Hope they all kena swine flu.
If hawkers increase the prices of food, we are the ones who are affected. Damn it pap!

I know. Everything they do, their minimum boundary is $0 cost (ie the thing they are working on must be self-sustainable and should not cost extra burden to their coffers)
It's typical corporate mindset, I understand that.
But this case really irks me. For certain things, such as basic necessities, why can't they just give up on profits and really just focus on $0 cost? The worst thing was that the only reason they are upping the rental was due to market rate.
They don't give a thought about the burden it's going to cost to ordinary Singaporeans.

What is market rate? With a market reeling downward there is still uptrend? I don't understand other than profiteering.

Well, I guess they are counting the amount of $$$ spent into renovating the place, and after renovation, asking an expert to estimate the price of rental. As to where this expert is from, the programme did not elaborate.
The authorities even mentioned that the rental to be upped was originally $2000, but that later, after hearing feedback, they decide to bring it down to $1700
I really thank them for their generiosity... crap
Anyway, I wrote in. I expect some mothergoose answer, but don't say I never try.

tsk tsk tsk tsk, this is the sort of govt we have, shake my head. As govt, they think only about money making and not the interest of the people.

I mean, I am not against them being profit-driven.
But give and take! Some parts, like basic necessities, if they can keep it low, do it! They are already taking so much from other aspects of our lives. Why everything market rate?
Sigh...
Expect a mothergoose standard reply from the govt. That's all I can say, but don't say I did not try.
I suspect that the answer to my enquiry will come in this form...
"We thank you for your feedback. We would like to bring to your attention that for 3 years, rentals have not increased, and we only decided to increase the rental this year..."
In other words, not answering the crux of the question at all. WHY always market rate?

Can't be. Even a developer will suffer lost if their timing is bad. I guess they have authority and that make them different from corporates.
I gave up writing in years ago. Never get any other than same old craps.
Remember to vote for opposition in the next election. This will keep PAP in check.

Either that or NTUC will take over and a bigger hike serve with SFI junks.
Guys, don't you know what boycott means? boycott hawker centres. this will cause the stall owners to lose business, be unsustainable and shut down, in turn pull out of rent. The evil landlords will have no choice but to abandon their hawker centres. The evil landlords will think twice.
You still have coffee shops you can go to.
then they find excuse to raise coffeeshop rent
we go posh resturants?
the govt dowan to slash rental for hawker centres cos it's tough to raise it back when times become good again i guess.
They should really slash the rental and make it compulsory for every hawker to reduce the price by 30-50 cents, depending on the food they sell. A study should be done on this, feedback taken from hawkers and suppliers before they decide on the price reduction for the various stalls.
Nvm la....i'm still waiting for the day when my hawker centre laksa becomes $5.
to rock^star--
Coming soon.

Do you not understand the issue? Your statement above is not related to the issue.
We are talking about WHY government cannot just help Singaporeans by keeping rental of hawker stalls low so that there is no upward pressure on prices, instead of raising rental BECAUSE of market rate?
For ISOLATED cases where there is a hawker who raise costs unreasonably, using your method is viable. But for the government doing this, how many hawker stalls you can boycott you tell me? Go eat restaurants everyday?

Yea, in the programme, they said the authorities initially calculated the market rate to be $2000 a month, but have reduced it to $1700 due to 'feedback'
Yea, subsidized. Market rate subsidy, which DOES NOT cause them a cent.
That's not subsidy to me.

It is understandable we all need to make money but they are doing it at the expense of the people. The root of the problem is they are using people as tools to satisfy their greed.
If presumbly after a basic renovation on a hawker centre without aircondition, then what the government did was to up the rental fees by double to $2000 taking into accord the market rate and slashing it by another 15% down to $1700. Then this 15% is said to be rebate.
Define market rate of the rental fees - On what yardstick is being used as comparison with - Foodcourt or coffeeshop?
