he can answer in only two ways
1) yes, here is my alternative
2) No, But the govt should do something about it.
why is it a trap? nevermind, don't answer. you will think i am trapping you if i asked.

What you are saying is that ERP works by marginalising the poor to take public transport. To a certain extent, ERP may deter some from driving to work. However, as we can see as driver on the road, ERP DOES NOT reduce traffic flow at all. This is a real problem and not one just to condemn the system as it is costly for us drivers. If you would bother to look around, the problem of traffic jams are very real. It is a daily occurance.
If ERP are able to reduce traffic jams, I would think that lesser of us would complain day in day out. But ERP does not solve anything, resulting in all of us lesser mortals to think of it as a myth.
It is common logic that if our dearest government wants to collect more taxes from cars, they would at last have to give us back something in the form of better network of roads (not a white elephant like KPE), wider road, reasonable laws to keep out those farking road hoggers who drive at 90km/hr at the 1st lane and does not think that giving way to vehicles to overtake is correct as they are within the speed limit. Idiotic motorcycles who take up 2-3 lanes at the same time. Lorries who overtake you then slow to almost a complete halt, etc. It is because of people like these who caused a huge empty space on the road and refuses to let others fill up the space. If you can imagine. Should we be able to fill up more of the road, we can move more vehicles. Shouldn't our stupid "traffic police" do more than just make themselves invisible and take photos to earn commission? If need be, we can employ our own photographer to take nicer pictures of our cars. Thank you.
There are simply easier ways to solve our traffic problems. It is just that our dearest government who is so UP THERE that they chose to employ a more profitable one.
Not really better, just that they don't pay me to do their jobs for them. I don't draw millions of dallars.
Just to let you know. If you take public transport, you wont feel our agony. Similarly, if you want to resign yourself to take public transport all your life, nobody will stop you. Just try to see things from other people's point at times. By sticking to your own view only, you will only distance yourself from the rest.
Originally posted by skythewood:yup, the effectiveness goes down. How effective it is, i can only guess. Let's say if ERP is turned off for the whole of May. Than BAM! you can see if ERP is working or not. Will traffic be as per normal, or will we see jams to rival that of bangkok?
Dude, the thing is not a matter of turning off ERP or what shiet.
We have been led to believe COE will curb the amount of cars on our road. However, is this happening? Same for ERP.
If you do not want to restrict the car population on the road, then you simply enhance your roads. But since you don't drive, we shall have nothing more to have a meaningful discussion.
In addition, road congestion is a problem worldwide. Just that other government does not make their citizens pay for their lack of competencies. That is why the people there have 1 lesser thing to complain.

well said, brat. Read some where, someone suggested about controlling the quota on purchase of cars rather than collecting money to earn profits thru ERP to solve problem. I have no idea if this help.
The crowd getting worse to worst on public transport. They can do something to increase the frequency. Even till now there is delay in trains.
This topic is ERP leh, why out of nowhere, some pap bashing come in? lol.
Some of the ERP needs to be modified. For eg, the CTE exit via Havelock Rd that leads to Chinatown or Raffles Place. The erp ends at 8pm. Quite pointless cos by 7pm on weekdays, you dun expect much traffic going that way.
If the purpose of ERP is to make roads faster and smoothen traffic, then what an oxymoron by jamming up other roads. And the worse thing is if I wana get home for dinner on time, I have to pay ERP also.

Just what most drivers would feel.
Erm..Fan...remember another 3-letters word starting with C and ends with E?

traffic jams is a fact of life. If you are expecting no traffic jam, that is being unrealistics. There are basically 2 ways to view traffic jam.
1) more roads (They are building. They are always building, if you realised)
2) less cars (high car maintainance, cost, ERP, stuff like that.)
yah, obviously i won't feel your agony, but i thought that this is a forum to share ideas and opinions. You feel ERP don't work enough for me, I said i don't know. I am not sure what will happen if the ERP is turned off today.
P.S. I only read the red part, which was in nice paragraphs. the rest i only skim through as it looked like a whole chunk.

Well said Rock!
What is the point of paying to enter and EXIT Orchard? What is the point of going to work before 7am and stay till 10.30pm just to avoid paying ERP? In anyway, why was ERP on till 10.30pm???

it is ironic. on one hand they encourage people to spend more time with families and on the other they are discouraging thru the ERP

yup, relevant questions. I am not sure of the answers, maybe you can guess the answers using your logic?

Yes dude, it is only a place to share our opinions and ideas.
Nobody said anything about zero jams. We are discussing whether ERP are effective in reducing jams. In the real world, we are always talking about reducing, not eliminating.
Hence, we are sharing with you why didn't we think that ERP is not really effective from what we can see in real life. You are sharing with us that you think it is effctive that's all.
P.s. The whole chunk wasn't meant for you to read again. It was my earlier post on what may be happening on the road and why ERP is not really that effective. It's so that you will not think that we are only only complaining. Try reading some chunks before you pass your comments. Thanks

the chunk is really chunky. if you did not only complain about ERP, than my post about only complaining does not apply to you. It will apply more for people who only complain and offer no alternatives.
You are a good man, but don't be too sensitive, ok?
actually the COE is a myth also. It seems more like a source of never ending revenue for the govt.
How the COE prices go up and down based on what factors...only god knows. A better way to curb car population would be to set the min downpayment rule again. Let's say the amount varies amongst the various car categories. This way, we would see lesser car reposessions and young people are not into debt so easily.
Originally posted by skythewood:yup, relevant questions. I am not sure of the answers, maybe you can guess the answers using your logic?
No need logic dude. We are irrelavant people who only know how to complain. Haha.
The logic is. As long as there are jams along a certain stretch of road, they only need to sign a paper to erect a gantry to collect money. Simple? Not an insult, just a friendly reminder that 1 solution does not work for all the problems. They are simply pushing the problem to other part of the world.
Imagine the fustration of paying to go into Orchard and paying to go home.

I always thought that COE was bidded. I remember some guy bidded a $50 COE before, way back in past...
