Because Taiwan is several times the size of Singapore?
Why a place called Taiwan which has a corrupt, multi-party political system could have a strong economy
Why corrupt, multi-party political system can't have strong economy?
Because most people in Singapore has been sold the idea that it is/was all the work of the cursed despot and his cronies when the reality is that it is the work of the people.
When the power and money, as history has shown, is concentrated in the hands of the few for too long, you find that cronyism, nepotism, greed and other evils start to surface and destroy the country.
It is not even whether the few that holds on to all the resources and power are intelligent and smart or not. If they are wise, they would relinguish the power and resources back into the hands of the people and let a few million people do it (if the people do not have the power and the resources they cannot/are less able to do it) instead of letting the few (themselves) do it.
Sure, when you have a few million people doing it, it is messy but the chances of complete failure is less than if it were concentrated inthe hands of the few.
There are some things that "the people" cannot do, like foreign affairs or national defense, for examples. There are many things that has to be done by the people and not by a cursed despot, his relatives and cronies, for:

the pervasive secret societies and corruption at government / society levels would remove good people from their jobs which would lead to a decline. But in Taiwan, companies such as Acer etc keep on innovating. are we seeing a miracle? don't know how Taiwan makes it possible at all. very weird.
and the best is the govt there don't pay themselves world class salary to run the country. They have more responsibilites than our ruling party. OUr ruling party thick skin to pay themselves world class salary, highest in the world but fail to stop Singapore from being the first to go into recession in asia. What a shame!
Time to change the ruling party.
Compared to the mafia-like legal extortion by the despots here, the "normal" protection money paid to secret societies members in other countries is preferable.
Compared to the despots here with their legal corruption, it is preferable to have the "normal" corruption in other countries.

we have mafias here, too. The difference is they are legalised mafias.
recently watched the taiwan news , it was reported that during this difficult time they received huge order for that certain industry and they wonder if economy is starting to turn for the better.

several times Singapore because their population is several times ours what. If you talking about per capita GDP, well I doubt it, seriously.
I would say that their tourism and entertainment sectors are formidable and resilient
electronics sector? should be suffering like the rest

Any doubts as to where the greatest source of organised crime stems from?
I am not entirely sure if terrorists, drug cartels, arms smugglers, money launderers and human traffickers combined could actually usurp criminal regimes backed by the full force of a constitution in terms of the ability to wreck havoc...

Dear Mr Yap,
Instead of cursing and swearing at PAP, can the opposition provide us with an alternative solution which is better?
If the opposition cannot provide a solution to the problems that we're facing, how can we vote them in? Solution is the ans to vote.
** Don't really support some of PAP's policy, but unless the opposition can come up with a better solution, I'll still stick to PAP.**

Probably the environment & education.

Whether you are looking at moving to Taiwan to work, or retire, you will be interested in the Taiwanese economy. The government has achieved amazing growth of around 8% a year over a period of thirty years, known as the Taiwanese Miracle. Both inflation and unemployment are under control and the country has a strong economy internationally.
The largest sector of the economy by GDP is the service sector, which accounts for nearly 75% of GDP. The sector is dominated by the technology industry, and it is one of the worlds largest computer and electronics designers and manufacturers, producing LCD Panel displays, Silicon Chips, computer networking equipment and consumer electronics goods.
Taiwan has a unique corporate ethos. Rather than encouraging large companies, the Taiwanese prefer to split a company into seperate, smaller companies if it they consider it has become too large. This strategy allows Taiwanese companies to remain highly flexible and enables an incredibly fast response to customer requirements. Partly due to this continued efficiency, there is a continual flow of business moving to Taiwan. The country, which controls the design of components is increasingly moving the manufacturing end of the production process to mainland China, where a growing number of Taiwanese live and work in the Taiwanese owned factories.
The retail sector of the economy continues to grow as the country reaps the rewards of its labor. The demand for high-end designer goods imported from the West is increasing, and the architecture of the city of Taipei is a product of its recent economic success.
The city of Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, and the largest city in the country, is home to some of the worlds most impressive buildings, including Taipei 101, currently the world's tallest building, with 101 floors and a height of 508 meters!
Taiwan's agriculture sector, which used to dominate the economy now accounts for less than 3% of GDP, mainly in rice, sugar and vegetables.
Around 3 million people visit Taiwan each year, and the government is trying to increase tourism to its many destinations. The country offers not only the urban, with shopping in Taipei in the many malls, including in the Taipei 101 building, but also large areas of mountainous countryside, and outdoor activities to rival any country. In addition to the mainland there are many beautiful outlying islands, like turtle island, so called due to its shape (like a turtle lying in the ocean) where wildlife thrives in an unspoilt environment.
The government is attempting to ensure Taiwan's strong economic position in the world in the future by diversifying its export market (it is currently trying to grow its European market) and developing its service sector even further, as China and other Asian countries gain shares of its more labor-intensive production work.

You can "stick is up* with anyone for all I care.
How many times must I say that I am not from the opposition?
Get the fundamentals right. You have to vote the opposition (at least 50%) just because they are the opposition to ensure that the cronyism and nepotism destroying the country is eliminated. It does not matter who the government of the day is, the people have to ensure that there is a strong opposition.
Otherwise cronyism and nepotism will always destroy the country. If you have despots in power that persecutes oppostion then you can either do it Dr Chee Soon Juan's way (go down on the streets) or curse the despot until he has a zombie wife and ....
If you don't want to do the Dr Chee Soon Juan's way or do it my way.... you can *stick it up* with the PAP and let the cronyism and nepotism destroy the country for all I care, I will just watch and laugh, for after all I have warned about this in sgforums from a long time ago.... if you havn't, click on: 07 Jun `08, 3:55AM
