It's pretty much the same way all over the world
We need judges.. like Judge Dredd !
I' Am .. THE LAW!
The Laws of Gravity can be thwarted depending on the circumstances that prevail.
When you can control the stellar arrangements in your world, can anyone blame you for defying gravity ?

It is with great indignation when one reads of such tales that the poor has little or no recourse against the rich when their suits are placed before those who judge. The rich will always win, simply because our judical system rely heavily on a trial system, which costs money, funds which the poor do not have and the rich has much.
As a result, more often than not, most poor would remain silent and bare injustices.
Having said that, our society had tried various social experiments, such as offering free legal services for trials, as well as social services offered by kind hearted lawyers who set aside their own free time to give free counselling.
Most critically of all, it must be made known that in Singapore, no one who challenges our laws or undermine them gets away scot- free. One may presume to escape for a week, a month, or years, but in the end, ALL criminals faces a fair trial to determine his/her crime.
Regardless if you are rich or poor, one will face punishment. There can be no escape. It is only the level of punishment that is awarded, determined only by the severity of one's case. The keyword is PUNISHMENT. No one who commits a crime against society or humanity escapes.
How does one judges remorse? Anyone can act remorseful. It is their actions, what they do after committing crime that the level of remorsefulness be judged, not mere words.
As for the level of punishment, i would prefer a society's lighter touch than a severe one, for most humanity sets out towards life with the noblest of intentions, but in the end due to their environment, surrender all that is pure. There can be redemption if the criminal is made to see the effect of his crime and be offered a chance to work for society instead of against it. Human lives are precious and any judical action that affects his/her life must be done with all fairness that he/she may return to society.
More often than not, it is the poor and uneducated who flouts society laws in their ignorance and must be given a chance, and thus one law for all, which results often the rich and educated escaping it through their purchase of brightest legal counsels or scam their crime through several layers of culpabilities.
BUT IN THE END, there is one judge, where all basic laws come from, whom no mortal man can escape for his crimes. The final accounting will come, either this life or at the end of his life. This is a reality we can see everyday, of unbelievable circumstances criminals get their justices and can attribute it to no mere coincidence but divine intervention. Even the secular judge who sentences hundreds to death for their crimes must account to Him - a higher being of many names and worshipped by many. Even atheists believe in a being higher than himself.

What do you expect from a Capitalised Society, either you take it or leave here. Dun create too much of a scenarios out of your nonsensical, so far, our laws had served us well, if not, total chao would had happened long long ago.
How can there be two laws serving different people, so what about the middle class gal like me, do you want them to create another laws for me and what will be the act like??? So, there will be laws for the rich, laws for the upper middle class, laws for the lower middle class, laws for the lower class, laws for the poor class?? And from there, you will start to argue why the upper class enacted laws is different from the poor class, and I will be argueing why my class of laws is so much troublesome in comparing with the lower class and so on...The Laws itself has no problem, it is the people problems, people like you and the govt problem, if you guys want to twist and turn and flip over, it up to you. Just leave the laws alone and update it as time change.
As time changes, peoples will start to talk differently with different perspectives in a different scenarios, dun tell me you talk about typewriter and film cameras in today context. It is therefore unfair to quote what people said in the past, the past may not be relevant in today context, but it does create a history of what it is today, and today will create what it is in the future.
One law serves everyone. Just that not everyone has the means or knowledge to use the law to his advantage.
Written laws are like spiders' webs; they will catch the weak and poor, but would be torn in pieces by the rich and powerful. - Anacharsis

Today, got money, can also buy a life back, what do you expect. Get rich lah, and not just rich, be super rich ya. Go study laws lah, no one is stopping anyone from education, we got a good education system here, you take what you want, if good, can even get scholarship and sponsorship.
During the late 90, i think i was in pri 6, the PAP govt already tell all of us about globlisation and the competition we singaporean is going to face, no more iron rice bowl for all, we need to upgrade,\ or look for business opportunities, otherwise you will be left behind, for the singapore success bus cannot wait for peoples who like to complain, comment, condemn but do nothing to improve himself/herself. So, guess those who listen and take the advices of the govt should be much richer than those who dun care, so now, as the rich buses move further away and leaving them, the talkative ones and poor ones, in the middle of the road, the disparity tends to create unsatisfaction, then from behind come the foreign workers, and that may be the final straw for those left behind...good luck

You seem to suggest that society should discriminate and i gather from your post that you do acknowledge that discrimination exists. I may sound idealistic, but competition and justice does not mix.

You have to be realistic about the situation, singapore is a developed country, from the 3rd to the 1st world, and if you are still having no education and skill to do much here, which i consider about 10% of our population is this catergory, go for upgrading or reskilling, move your butt, you cannot expect people to carry you to school or training centres.
In a fast and furious society and especially so in our economy, how can we wait for a few poor chaps, who are still walking slowly behind while the whole load of peoples in the bus to richness is waiting for them.
I am not discriminating the society, in every society you go, even japan or whatsoever, there are beggers and poor peoples, but i can tell you that no society as far i hv seen, not even in japan or america govt, care so much for the poor Singaporeans in hope of them to pick up some skills and opportunities to work. What more than can you ask from our govt, and because all these, opposition had a hard time wining seats in the parliament

Eh, hiring people based on their ability, character, virture is hardly discriminating. But the discussion is not on that. This thread is about LAW.

as i said earlier, if you dun like to laws, join the laws, build yurself up and when you are the lawmakers, change it. But dun change the women's Charter ya.
If you dont like the Law, you would be the last one to become a so-called "lawmaker".
Its a given that the state of any country is represented by its economic growth. And in a country like Singapore, in fact any country nowadays, economic growth is driven by huge corporations and obviously, the government would be oblige to show favouritism to this group. It is their interest that the rich are treated better than the poor, or I should say, the ordinary people since the Middle Class is believed to have some power in decision making. Hence, the propensity to say that two laws exist, but its one for the haves, and another for the have-nots.

You do have your right to speak your mind as much as i do. But i do feel that you are not sticking to the issue as i cant see how hiring based on the strengths of individuals can be likened to discrimination

My dear, If you dont like men, maybe u shld go for a sex change operation. I tried to think as a woman in my posts in the other thread. I would want protection both as a man and women. I mean who likes to get victimised? But every time i read the posts over there it seems that some females have the thinking that we are questioning the existence of it.
