According to Lee Kuan Yew, the value of a language is based on its usefuless, not on culture or identity.
That is why he suppresses dialect and promotes mandarin.
Will malay and tamil singaporeans be missing out if they can't speak mandarin?
Should Malays and Tamils Singaporeans learn Mandarin?
I would like to hear the views of fellow malay and tamil singaporeans.
yes we should.

Do you agree with LKY?
What is usefulness? to do business and make money? to be able to communicate with others and therefore able to accept and adapt better? to learn more what the culture that is associated with the language and better able to appreciate and respect them, especially your own ?
You do not find Malay and tamil, or Hindi, or Thai ... who do not speak their own language!!
Whether malay and tamil should learn Chinese, or Russians, or American all depend on the outlook of their parents. I know of many malays who speak very fluent mandarin, they probable never thought about leaving malaysia to do business in China, afterall, to many of them, Indonesia is also a big market for them and you don't need mandarin there.
In Europe, most people speak more than 3 languages; in malaysia, the Chinese speak english, malay, mandarin and dialects. In singapore, chinese only know how to speak singlish mandarin, which is 70% mandarin, 30% english; or they speak singlish english, which is 70% english and 30% mandarin. Many are incapable of speaking 100% english or mandarin.
Singapore education has certainly failed in teaching language as a mean to better understanding and a carrier of cultural values. don't know if LKY agree to that.

hhmmmmm youare saying malaysians speak perfec malay, chinese, english, dialect? man, singaporean sucks!
although most of the people i see can speak good english and good chinese.
the older generation speak good chinese, broken english, good dialect.
I feel deeply ashamed to have Lee Kuan Yew as a leader of Singapore.
Other leaders defend their culture and love their culture, but Lee Kuan Yew says that my hokkien dialect culture has no "value".
I feel disgraced by him.

don't know what you mean by 'perfect'? there are many different version of hokkien, 建或闽?hk cantonese and guangdong cantonese are also not entirely same. there is no need to be perfect, just don't use 3 or 4 languages in one sentence, only singaporean can understand.
There is really no need to kill dialect in place of mandarin, why can't singaporean learn dialect at home, english and mandarin in school? do we also need to learn malay because it is our national language?

what dialect? wrong thread, go the other thread and post.
hahaha....this thread cant be serious?!
LKY has a theory that graduate parents will produce bright kids for the nation. Hahaha and he says it's based on genes. I beg to differ....it's just a matter of graduate parents having more money.
Now u see how dumb that is? And that's why he can say things like a language's value depends on it's usefulness and therefore discourage dialects.
Well of cos, he cant be that dumb cos he's got a 1st class honours from cambridge lol.

This statement is wrong.
why you think skywood cannot think for himself? its just so happened he agrees with LKY on this issue but you and I disagree. why everything you disagree all become government propaganda?

look at the thread title...
There is no use for tamil and malay speakers to learn mandarin as they can communicate in English.
